My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Astro is a big puppy! He weighs 62 lbs but thinks he is a lapdog. He loves pets and scratches and all kinds of treats. He is very food motivated and will listen to any command and drop anything if you offer him a treat. He has a sensitive stomach and struggled with loose poops while on a kibble with chicken and lamb. He has since been switched to a fish and brown rice kibble and is back to normal.

Astro does need some work on his manners. He knows sit, down, and stay but will often pretend he does not know stay unless he's being bribed with treats. His food motivation makes him easy to train. He likes to jump up and will be mouthy when overly excited or trying to get your attention to play. I don't think he has an ounce of aggression in him. He really loves other dogs and all he wants to do is play with them. My resident dogs are not the biggest fan of his puppy energy (they are not really into wrestle-type playing), and they will occasionally snap at Astro, but Astro's reaction is always to back off for a few minutes. He will try to play again, but eventually settles down. He thrives around other playful pitties and could play for hours. We've met up with another Philly bully team foster, and the two boys ran around and wrestled in the snow for a while.

For toys... He is a super chewer, and likes to eat cloth/blankets/fabric toys. He does better with rope toys (he loves to play tug and is a very vocal tugger) and the benebone/nylabone plastic type material toys. He has been known to chew up a roll of paper towels, and recyclable boxes so keeping these things out of his reach is highly recommended.

He is great in his crate. He will sleep in there at night without whining. He spent a lot of time in his crate during our two-week decompression period when he first arrived at our house. He did have a few accidents but we think this was likely related to the stomach sensitivity. He should not have any blankets, towels, or cushions in his crate as he will rip them up and destroy them. He is totally fine on just the plastic bottom of the crate.

On walks, he was originally a puller. We've worked on leash training a lot and he's gotten better. We were recommended the Herm Sprenger prong collar by a trainer and this has made a huge difference for him. He responds well to a gentle tug from the collar as a redirection. He loves other people and dogs, so he often gets distracted and wants to say hi on walks in our neighborhood. He does like to play with and chew on his leash, we've been working on ignoring this behavior and redirecting him but I think that because he has rope leashes, he thinks they are toys.

Overall, Astro is a love. He does have a lot of energy, but once he is comfortable and settled in he can be very chill and snuggly. He did take some time to get comfortable here and we had a few issues with his mouthiness and jumping when he was initially adjusting. As he's gotten more comfortable here, a lot of the behavior issues have settled - we think they were due to his being stressed. Astro would do best in a home with another younger dog that he can play with. A house with a yard is even better! It may take a few days or even weeks but once his true personality starts to show you will be absolutely obsessed with this boy.
