My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Rizzo. She lives up to the name. She is a little salty and a little sweet at the same time. She is very obedient with her foster and shows constant love and affection with her and now has several human and doggie friends at daycare.

Rizzo showed up on my mom's porch one morning and decided to stay there. I don't blame her, it's a nice place. I went to pick her up and she came right to me and submissively rolled over and let me completely harness her with a harness lead. She could not lick me enough! She was a fearful mess when I had to take her to the shelter for her stray hold and continued to get worse. I decided it was worth it to crate and rotate and just get her out of there when she was released. It took some time for Rizzo to warm up to my very patient dog. Since then she has welcomed, loved on and played with multiple fosters with no more issues. She goes to daycare at All Dogs Bark and Play.

Rizzo does have barrier aggression so if a dog is barking on the other side of the fence she is fence fighting. We have been able to curb this by standing between her and the fence or keeping her in the smaller fenced area to play outside so she doesn't have access to the one section with small dogs that bark a lot.

Rizzo is not comfortable with people. Sometimes she acts as if she wants to be but when approached she flips her head and starts to growl. This improves with humans she meets consistently and once trust is earned she loves hard. Please note, her behavior is not guarding her owner but herself. She is doing very well in social settings as long as the humans ignore her and toss treats occasionally. She is learning "place" and this girl is smart so she will pick that up quickly and we will move on to the next step in her socialization training. Rizzo needs to trust you to love you. It will require multiple meet and greets. We know this is true from experience in daycare. It took a week of boarding while I was out of town but she is now friends with the staff at daycare and I am so thankful for that.

With me she has shown me no signs of aggression even with correction and guidance. I can correct her, pick her up, look at her teeth and not one little growl. She wants to be near me at all times. She is very calm. Doesn't get very energetic about much other than playing with her friends or sometimes letting them know they are getting too out of hand. She most likely has a herding breed in her mix. She is kennel trained and actually loves the kennel and regards that and the space under my bed as her safe places. She is potty trained and has never had an accident in my home. She eats in her kennel and is food agressive when it comes to the bowl of food or chew bones. However she does treat training with her fellow fosters fine. We are working on the resource guarding and she corrects and leaves the bone. With her food I have fed her by hand to learn to leave it and she is still growly if you try to grab her bowl. However, just a firm "no and leave it," she will leave the bowl and lets me pick it up.

She is small but stout lol. She shows love with lots of licking and rolling on her back for belly rubs. She has yet to sleep in the bed during her time. She likes to be under the bed. So I put a memory foam floor mat under the bed and that is where she goes every time.

Unfortunately my home is not going to be her permanent home but I will keep working with her until we find that right match because she will be a wonderful companion dog for the person willing to give her a chance.

Additional adoption info

For us, the adoption process begins the day we take a dog or cat into our rescue. It’s a huge responsibility, taking in a lost soul and promising them a happy life, but we are pretty proud of the forever families we’ve helped create because our adoption process is so thorough.

The first step in adopting is to fill out the adoption application. This helps our volunteers understand what kind of new friend you are looking for, and allows us to identify any issues that would prevent us being able to place certain animals in certain homes. For example, breed restrictions in your town or apartment complex, etc…

The Beauties will conduct a vet check to make sure the pets you currently have are all up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered. We will also contact you to set up a home visit, where we can make sure that the home you have meets the needs of the animal you are interested in. Example: fence height for dogs who are jumpers, stairs for dogs who have mobility challenges, etc… We try to troubleshoot any potential problem areas and offer friendly advise so that our ultimate goal, a forever happy match, can be achieved.

After the application process is complete, the real fun begins! It’s time for Meet-N-Greets! We have a professional dog trainer on our board of directors, and we can schedule her assistance in helping you with dog-to-dog introductions while you are searching for your new family member. It’s amazing how often the existing family pet has a little something to say about who they want to spend time with and having a pro help out makes the potential for a successful intro go through the woof! We mean, roof!

Once you have decided on the dog or cat of your dreams, all that is left to do is sign the adoption contract and pay the fee, which includes all vaccinations, microchip and spay/neuter.

More about this rescue

Beauties and Beasts is a state-licensed 501(c)(3) death row rescue located in Wichita, Kansas. Since our founding in October 2014, we have been able to save the lives thousands of death row animals, we have also been able to network out thousands more animals to other rescues. We are a completely 100% volunteer run rescue, we also rely on 100% donations from our followers and supporters to carry out our mission to save animals in our community.

Our purpose is to rescue death row animals from the shelter and in our community and place them in foster homes where they can receive the care and training needed to become family pets. Our main mission is to change these animals’ worlds one rescue at a time. Another large part of our mission is to be a voice for animals in need throughout our community and we are proud to say we have been able to make an impact on the streets of our city as well.

We do not discriminate against breed, age, medical needs, or behavior. We love ALL animals and breeds the same.
