My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Hatch Date: Approx 1992

Shadow is a 31yo DNA confirmed male, special needs Congo African Grey. He was with one female caregiver his entire life and has strong preferences for females, especially those that are blonde. He has met other females with different color hair and shows zero interest in them. As of late has been showing hormonal behaviors to his foster mom, who happens to be blonde. He has a type!

Shadow has extreme lameless in his right foot, causing it to clench. This could be due to an old injury or developing arthritis. To help maintain comfort and some mobility, Shadow gets anti inflamatories twice daily. His enclosure has plenty of wide perches to make it easy for him to get around. He does like being at the bottom of his enclosure as well - he sleeps there overnight.

Shadow has a great diet of Zupreem and Harrisons pellets and loves fruits and vegetables. Corn, green apples and grapes are his current favorite.

Shadow has an insatiable appetite for playing with toys - especially ones with bells or rope. He typically goes through at least one new toy a day. Even with his handicap, Shadow does frequently climb off his cage to walk around on the floor. He can be destructive to molding, furniture, etc. As such he will need constant supervision so he does not get into trouble, or go into a cavity (under a dresser, in a closest, etc) which promotes hormonal behaviors.

He will sometimes attempt to fly however with his handicap and missing several primary feathers, the floor catches him quickly.

Due to his special needs and preferences, Shadow will only be adopted to a female primary caregiver who does not have dogs or cats. His forever home must have bird experience with solid vet history as Shadow will need continued health care.

Shadow is being fostered in Parsippany, NJ, and it will be necessary to drive to do the required visit. At least 3 visits will be required to adopt Shadow. We will NOT ship our birds.

For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA, we have no central location.  As our adoptable birds are living in volunteers’ homes, or in their family's home, we only allow approved applicants to meet our birds.

If interested in meeting Shadow, please review our adoption policies, and complete an adoption application on our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The adoption procedure begins with completing an adoption application and returning it to us. We will check your references and then call you for a telephone interview. While we check your references, we will ask that you review an educational power point presentation. After your application is approved, it is our policy that you visit with the bird(s) three times to have multiple interactions with them and give you time to consider the adoption and get ready for your new family member. There is an adoption fee for each bird.
