My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you!

Black dog lovers - hold on to your hearts! Meet beautiful Bailey who is simply amazing! Bailey came to our rescue from the Mobile County Shelter in AL. She was picked up as a stray and while we will never know where this gentle girl spent the first years of her life, it is apparent that she was once someone’s pet. This tender soul was in a very scary and dangerous situation. Being black in coloring, the color least adopted, her life was in danger. Although Bailey did not deserve this disloyalty from her family, she holds no grudge and is happy and grateful for each day.

Bailey is the most loving girl you will ever meet and our black beauty has never met a stranger. You can tell when you meet her that she longs to belong. Bailey has soft, expressive eyes that seem to look right into your heart and she often looks to her humans for direction and assurance. She will then flick her beautiful plume of a tail to and fro when you say, "good girl!”

At 50 lbs., Bailey is thought to be about 2years old. She may be a Flat-Coated Retriever mix but whatever it was that went into her DNA, it surely produced one loving pup! Bailey is good with other dogs and we expect she would be fine with children over the age of 10 years. She was too curious about the cats she met at the vet's office so we will seek a home without cats for Bailey.

Bailey came into to our rescue was a minor skin condition that has been treated. Her coat is looking so much better now and you can see how plush it is in her photos. We're sure you can imagine running your fingers through her silky coat and how she will respond with soft purring sounds. Bailey is under heartworm treatment, is up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed, and micro-chipped. If you’re considering adopting a dog, please remember that a dog of any color can fit your lifestyle. Don’t overlook this black beauty because you may be overlooking your new best friend. Bailey will come north to be directly adopted in mid-October.

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun.

If you would like to be part of Bailey's rescue story, have an active lifestyle, and are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Cheryl to be considered to adopt Bailey.

Black Dog Syndrome
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by an adoption website, member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on the website.

You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these dogs and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
