My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Vixen!! Vixen is a Mix Breed. Vixen is approximately 1 year 4 months old (Jan2024) and approximately 55lbs. She is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and HW negative. Vixen loves, loves, loves, being close by and getting lots of attention. (Did I mention loves?!) It takes a bit for her to warm up to new dogs but once she does, she enjoys running and playing with them. Vixen is house trained and is great with her fosters family including their grandchildren. We don’t know how she is with cats but can cat test her if needed. From Vixen’s foster mom- “She is a wonderful, loving and intelligent pup and I know she’ll bring lots of happiness to her new family.” Please consider opening your heart and home to Vixen. *** Vixen does not do well at adoption days (she gets nervous/scared and shuts down). If you are interested in meeting Vixen, please fill out and application and we will contact you directly to schedule a meet & greet outside of PetSmart.

More about this rescue

What is APAWS?
A.P.A.W.S (Animal Protection and Welfare Society) is a volunteer, foster-based, no-kill, 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization based out of Baton Rouge, LA.

What does this mean? APAWS has no paid board members or staff. We do not have a brick and mortar location. We are supported by generous and loving volunteers who agree to shelter and care for the animals as a temporary placement until the animals find their forever homes.

Our Misson
Since 2004, APAWS has been dedicated to ensuring that all pet animals in and around the Baton Rouge area live in homes that provide for all of the animal’s physical and emotional needs (including love, compassion, daily care and medical care) for the animal’s lifetime. We do understand that things may not always go as planned. APAWS will always provide a safety net for the pets that we adopt out- should something ever happen and they need our assistance again. All animals in our care will be spayed / neutered and up to date on age appropriate vaccinations before adoptions are finalized.

Our Vison
Our main goal has always been to break the stigma around rescue animals and reduce the number of animals that are euthanized in local shelters by proving that you can rescue wonderful dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments. Through our work with both animals and humans, APAWS strives to make Southeast Louisiana a more inclusive environment where everyone can experience the transformative benefits of responsible, humane pet ownership.
