My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MOCHI

Hi, I'm Mochi! My journey began alone in a puddle, extremely wary of humans, and resembling a small, bedraggled wolf. Thankfully, K9 Angels took me in, and my foster mom showed me the gentler side of life with lots of patience, walks, and hot dogs.

I've come a long way since then, especially after surgeries for my chronic hip dysplasia. I'm working on strengthening my back legs - every day is leg day for me! I've learned to enjoy gentle touches, but it's essential to understand that I still need time and patience to build trust. Forcing interactions can break my trust, and I may even respond defensively.

I am particularly cautious around men, often barking to maintain my space, but I'm slowly learning with the help of treats. Frequent at-home grooming is a must for my beautiful coat, though I still have my limits, especially around my hips and this glorious tail.

I get along with all dogs, although my play can be a bit on the rougher side for the littler ones. Cats and other small animals aren't suitable companions for me due to my high prey drive. A yard to call my own would be a dream for me as I love outdoor spaces and may not have the appropriate manners for apartment living due to my alertness to sounds and movements around me.

My foster mom thinks I'm the most gorgeous, loveable goofball. I'm fond of following her around, enjoying head scritches, and savoring treats like freeze-dried chicken feet (my favorite). I'm patient and quiet when alone and will calmly nap at the door while I await her return. But don't be fooled, for I am a very young chow chow with lots of energy! Playtime, puzzles, and lots of walks are absolutely essential for my busy chow chow brain.

While I wouldn't make a great first dog, I would thrive in a home with someone that is experienced with the chow chow breed and/or working with aloof, fearful behavior. A calm, adult-only environment where my boundaries are respected is paramount. I might not be the easiest dog, but for the right person, I'm going to be the most loyal and loving companion.

Mochi is a female Chow/Spitz mix with an estimated date of birth of 02/10/2022.

More about this rescue

K-9 Angels Rescue is an all-volunteer, all-breed canine rescue organization established in February 2012.

We are a rescue group for shelter dogs who run out of time. In other words, we are not a shelter, have no permanent facilities, and are not equipped to take in dogs from the public. We select dogs from the greater Houston "kill" animal control facilities who would not have made it out alive. (Don't worry! If you need help rehoming a dog, there are other non-profit groups who can assist you.)

No one involved in K-9 Angels receives ANY compensation. Our volunteers are compassionate animal welfare advocates who contribute their time, skills, and finances to shelter homeless dogs in Houston. To save the lives of the abandoned, abused, and stray dogs who end up in Houston's animal control facilities, K-9 Angels relies completely on adoption fees, donations, and our amazing volunteers.

K-9 Angels covers ALL costs for dogs currently in the program. During intake, every dog gets a microchip and is spayed or neutered (if old enough for the procedure). If the dog being adopted is not already altered at the time of their adoption, the dog will be altered within 2 weeks of adoption at our vet at our cost, with the exception of puppies which will be altered as soon as the puppy is ready. We fund all medical care necessary, even if we have to raise extra Helping Paw funds for special cases! From the time they enter the program to the time they graduate, K-9 Angels dogs are kept up-to-date on all vaccines (DHPP, bordetella, rabies) as well as heartworm and flea prevention.

We commit to K-9 Angels dogs until they are adopted.
Our volunteer foster homes patiently provide safety, love, and integration into a household environment - a key to successful adoptions. The biographies, pictures, and even videos from foster homes are important "pup-licilty" for our dogs! We are always in need of additional foster homes.

Our goal is a "fur-ever" home! We take every precaution not to contribute to the dog overpopulation problem here in Houston. Applications are processed according to our adoption policies to insure the best situation for our dogs and the families who adopt them.
