My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Skye
I was a 3-month-old orphan when I first set paw at the HSHC. Don`t you think I was a cutie-patootie? I was adopted very soon after arriving and lived with my owner for a year and a half. But he surrendered me back to the HSHC in August. Now I am a little over 2-years-old and confused about this significant change in my life. The HSHC Feline Care Specialists told me that when kittens are orphaned, they miss out on the education and discipline the mother cat provides. They don`t learn how to control their urges to stalk and chase humans. Cats are natural hunters and have a prey drive. Because I am an energetic cat, I require plenty of interactive playtime with my humans, utilizing puzzle toys, feathered wand toys, and laser pointers that I can chase and catch. It is much like sending a child to preschool to learn how to be social. The HSHC staff felt that I would benefit from living in a foster home. At the beginning of October, I did just that. My foster mom (FM) sent the interviewer lady (IL) the following report on my progress.
Skye is such a sweetheart! Her personality and behavior were very different from what we`d expected when we got her home. She`s such a happy girl, and we so enjoy having her with us. We`ve been cautious to introduce her to only family members, but she`s been so friendly and happy to see each new person. She loves to be petted and scratched on her back and ears. Skye will run right up to us for some attention when we come into her room. Since we are taking it slow with her introduction to the home, she is still living in my daughter`s room. Skye will often lie on her lap or right beside her. They are BFFs. The only quirky thing she does is to scrabble her way up onto my daughter`s loft bed. Then she refuses to try to get down on her own. So we have to go up and carry her down several times a day. She`s a plus-size girl (18.6 pounds), so it`s not easy to carry her down the steps. She loves to play with fishing pole toys, laser pointers, anything crinkly, and ribbons. We have playtime several times a day. I think she`ll benefit from more socialization as we introduce her to the rest of the house and, hopefully, our cat. We have been very impressed with how brave and calm she`s been coming into a new home.
My daughter has been teaching her to sit on her hind legs like a groundhog. It`s adorable, and with her weight management diet, she`s not even getting treats for doing this! Skye uses the litterbox perfectly.

More about this shelter

With an open admission policy, a No-Kill philosophy, and more than 3,100 animals crossing our threshold each year, we have still maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.

This is an amazing feat for any organization…let alone one that takes in some of the most abused, injured and seriously ill animals imaginable.
