My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Niko’s Story: Niko came from a severely economically-depressed area, and at 2-1/2 years old he had never seen a vet! His owner surrendered him to a shelter and never turned back . . . it's amazing that, having come from such a background, this boy is so happy and loving. (Though the power of forgiveness and the resiliency in dogs is something that NEVER ceases to amaze us!) Niko has one of those faces that will make him look like a puppy his whole life -- his dancing amber eyes and his lush red and white coat combine to make him as beautiful outside as he is inside.

Niko's Foster Mom Says:

Niko is our little red-headed bundle of adoration. He came to us distrustful of sudden moves and seeming anxious about the world in general. We decided to just take things very slowly and see if time and quiet would be good medicine for him. Apparently it was a valid recipe. He is still a high energy anxious boy who will love a settled home without the bustle of children but he has calmed down quite a bit and we now find ourselves in danger of fat lips and wet cheeks because he loves to jump up to share kisses when you're least expecting them. I tried calling him Ricky Ricardo because he would get that wide-eyed look the famous red-headed Lucy could do so well when Ricky called her name, "Luuuuuuuuucy!," and since he was a boy calling him Lucy was out of the question--but Ricky Ricardo just proved too much of a mouthful so Niko it is . Strangers getting down in his face still makes him uneasy but he now mostly reacts with those kissy leaps, as if trying to ply them with his sweetness. Worked on us anyway! He absolutely adores his people and TLC and pleasing us is obviously becoming important to him. Yesterday was a day for noticeable changes. In the morning he was running around the yard burning off some of his youthful energy while some of the other dogs were clambering for TLC; suddenly he stopped behind them and started barking to get my attention so he wouldn't be left out. Later, he was out playing with his bone and when told to come back in he jumped up and got halfway in before remembering he'd left his bone so he raced back to pick it up but then came straight in. We can and do have him out with every other dog here and he has no issues; he can play rough like the rest of the gang but much of the time he really just amuses himself running. He is absolutely intrigued by the horses next door (must think they are the biggest dogs in the world) and if our fence had any weak spot I'm sure he would run right out it true to husky nature. We have yet to have him in the field long enough for him to actually wear himself out. At the same time, he's very happy to simply sit down and listen to me tell him how wonderful he is, or he'll roll over for a belly rub with a happy husky smile. For being so high energy, he is very, very well behaved for grooming--wagging his tail most of the way through his bath and truly enjoying the rub down and brushing. We've managed to groom out most of his sunburned old top coat and he's also shed most of his winter undercoat so he glows with health now. He already knows sit and down commands but pulls quite a bit on leash. He will benefit from a basic obedience course with someone who can be a lovingly patient partner and trainer rather than an instant success disciplinarian--given the chance, Niko works hard to please.
The one other absolute caveate for Niko is that he is NOT cat-friendly. He truly thinks felines should be erradicated from the planet (I know some people who would agree!) so if you have cats you are unfortunately not going to be able to be his forever home.
He is house trained, crate trained, up-to-date on all his shots, tested negative for heartworm and is on Interceptor preventative, is parasite free, neutered, and ready for a family who will love him forever for the wonderful sensitive boy he is. All you have to do is look into those pleading deep amber eyes and you'll be hooked. Just be prepared to open your heart wide to match all the love he has in store for you.
