My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you!

Tulio is a loving and easy-going boy. It appears he spent his prior life as a cherished companion, yet something happened that recently caused his prior owner to leave him at a dog bakery in the area of New Orleans. Tulio came in to us already neutered, microchipped, and heartworm negative. With heartworm infestation being so high in Louisiana, it certainly seems like this cutie pie was previously well cared for.

Tulio is about 5-6 years old and is likely a Golden Retriever mixed with something equally sweet! He loves giving kisses and simply being with his humans. This is a charming and gentle boy as you can see in this video. He is even calm around cats and he is good with other dogs.

The shelter staff in LA where Tulio was taken fell in love with him and asked if we could taken him into our rescue. Of course we were happy to do so. The staff shared their intake assessment:

"Physical Handling: The key word for Tulio is “affectionate.” Tulio approaches in a friendly, relaxed, and outgoing manner. He accepted touching of the body, tail, paws, ears, snout, etc, with applied pressure, without resistance. He welcomed the attention.

Dog Intro: Tulio is a laid back guy and is not interested in the nonsense from the hyper pups. But as long as they get out of his face, he’s couldn't care less being around other dogs. He has been reported to be the same in playgroups.

Cat Intro: Tulio had very little interest in the cats with no reaction to hissing. He remained indifferent."
What a good boy you are TULIO!!

Tulio is about 10-15 lbs overweight at 85 lbs, but don't tell him that! We are working on getting his weight down with a healthy diet and portion control. Tulio has a little hitch in his giddy-up and is getting injections to help with inflammation. We had x-rays taken and no surgery was indicated. We believe the injections, along with weight loss, will help with Tulio's stiffness. This does not hinder him from getting around or wagging that fluffy tail to and fro. He may never run a marathon, but he is fine to take a walk through the neighborhood or do some moderate hiking. He loves running in the vet's fenced-in yard and shows no signs of discomfort.

Tulio will be coming north from AL in late October to be adopted directly. All Tulio wants is a fur-ever home and people to love him. In return, he will offer his unending devotion. Picture him curled up in front of the fire in LL Bean fashion right next to you. His heart is calling for you to love him. His eyes are reaching out for that special someone in the world who is meant just for him. If you are that “someone” who Tulio is speaking to, be sure to apply today!

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun.

If you have a quiet home, a physically fenced yard, and are seeking a calm companion, and are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Cheryl to be considered to adopt Tulio.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
