My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You may remember Sammy, our floofy 6-pound Maltese mix, from last year. Sadly, this little guy’s adopter has fallen ill, and so he has had to return to us.

We believe Sammy is around 3 years old. He is unsure about why he’s in the shelter again after having landed in a loving home. He’ll need to build his confidence back up and learn to trust all over again, but we know he can do it. He just needs someone willing to offer him patience and personal space so he can start to feel safe once more.

This teensy peanut gets along perfectly with dogs and cats. He loves people he trusts, but it does takes time to earn that.

His curiosity is part of his charm; he’ll closely watch everything you do. You’ll want to walk him through what he can expect from you each step of the way. He may even cower in fear when you prepare to leash him up for an outing. He’d most likely benefit from living with a fellow (more confident) canine sibling his size to help him navigate the big, wide world.

You’ll enjoy his bouncy sashay on walks. Even strolls in the rain don’t put him off. Having time out and about town gives him a chance to satisfy his inquisitiveness, take in all the fascinating sights and smells, and check out how everyone in his neighborhood is doing. He’ll happily guard your home, but he’d much prefer that you refrain from teasing him with his food or toys.

Once he knows you won’t take advantage of his diminutive size, Sammy will show you his belly and sleep in your lap. Note that his nickname is “Yogi” because he’ll lower himself into a wee downward dog pose if he's really enjoying the scritches you are sharing. He loves snoring under the covers in his human's bed. He’s housetrained and neutered.

To make Sammy’s acquaintance, he asks that you please fill out an online application. Email stefanie.d@poainc.org to learn more.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We do have a screening and application process. Protectors of Animals requires a veterinarian check before any adoption.

One of our experienced Placement Team members will meet with you and show you the cat, kitten or dog you are interested in, or will guide you towards cats, kittens or dogs that are appropriate for your home environment. We will discuss with you the background of the cat, kitten or dog and what special needs or requirements he or she may have. We will happily take the time to carefully answer any questions you have or discuss any concerns.

POA does not charge an adoption “fee.” It costs POA anywhere from $100 and $400, or more, per dog or cat or kitten to make them well and prepare them for adoption. We are an all-donation organization and we rely on adoption donations to help us continue our work. When you adopt a cat or dog, we will ask for a donation. Our adoption donation information can be found at our website at www.poainc.org.

More about this rescue

We are a NO-Kill rescue and shelter for cats and dogs.

POA was formed in 1975 to rescue abandoned, abused and stray cats and dogs. Today we are one of the oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations in the northeast. POA is here to stay! You will not find a more dedicated, experienced or thorough resource for improving the lives of Connecticut cats and dogs. We confine our focus to our home state because this is where our infrastructure and resources reside, as well as our leadership.
