My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Courtesy Post: Owner Surrender/Rehoming- Floyd, VA

Meet Rakha! He is a 5 year old Australian Shepherd in Floyd, VA and weighs 45 lbs. He is neutered and on flea/tick prevention, but isn’t up to date on shots (except for rabies) or on heartworm prevention. Rakha is good with older dogs (he grew up with an older female dog) and chickens. He will chase cats, but will also cower from them if they stand up to him. Rakha is good with children, but doesn’t do well when they cry. He loves to snuggle, go on hikes and be with his people!

He has separation and noise anxiety, which has progressed as he gets older. We have used various medications to manage this with varying degrees of success. Our 9 year old has recently developed a very intense pain syndrome that leaves her weak, unsteady and often in pain that causes her to cry. When she cries, Rakha gets extremely anxious. He will cry/bark and either jump all over her or try to escape out of the house.

We have made the very difficult decision find him a new home, due to life changes and his increasing anxiety. He needs to be with someone who is experienced in dog behavior/training or who is willing to invest the time and energy with a good trainer. Rakha is incredibly smart, very goofy and has a lot of energy! He would do best with someone who is very active, works from home, or can take him to work with them. He can’t be left in a crate at this time (possible confinement anxiety) and has to be on medication if left alone. He will do a lot of damage to a house and/or himself if he is left alone and not on the proper medication. He can open and unlock a variety of door knobs. We are hoping to find a wonderful home for him ASAP so that he can begin to live his best, most unstressed life.

If you think you can provide a great home for Rakha, please contact the owner listed below. There is a $150 rehoming fee to assure good folks with good intentions. This fee will be donated to Australian Shepherds Furever for their assistance in placing Rakha.
