My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you!

Someone, somewhere said, “Red hair…A crown you can’t take off.” Most appropriate words to describe our newest little prince, Rustler. Unfortunately, Rustler’s Dad has had a change in his circumstances, and he can no longer care for him. Rustler is not getting the exercise and attention he desperately needs and craves, and his Dad understands that it is not fair to him. Because of this, Sunshine was called and asked to find a home where the humans can provide the exercise and attention more in tune with Rustler’s needs.

If you’ve ever met a retriever puppy, then you know that they can be bundle of energy. At 11 months old, Rustler is still very much a puppy. Although a good boy at heart, this poor boy doesn’t know what to do with all of his pent-up energy! Add to that that the only home he has ever known is in Manhattan, we think this boy deserves his own yard to chase his beloved balls in. Rustler is a really good boy who loves people, other dogs and kids. He is well socialized with dogs, having spent many days at the local dog park. When Rustler is drained, he believes he is a lap dog and will join you on the bed or couch for nuzzles and cuddles.

Rustler has not had much training in his young life. Although he sits nicely, he is in need of someone to teach him routine obedience and manners. He is a world class jumper and, in fact, when he met both Sunshine volunteers, he managed to greet both of them mid jump. Rustler was so excited to go for a walk with our volunteer, he offered to help her carry the leash. He gets excited when he sees other people and dogs and needs to learn not to pull.

When he picked Rustler up, our Sunshine volunteer had this to say about him, “A beautiful, red Golden; mostly he needs daily exercise, but he calms down fairly quickly. He is actually lying down in the back seat of the car right now. Healthy and strong.” Rustler will definitely need an adopter willing to work with a trainer on his basic manners as well as training him not to jump or help himself to everything on the counter. We believe this boy would love a doggy brother or sister to play with as well as his very own fenced in yard.

Rustler weighs almost 70 lbs. He is up to date on vaccinations and is scheduled to be neutered in the coming days. If you are active, willing to work with a trainer and are looking for a happy companion dog to share in your adventures with, Rustler might be the perfect fit for you.

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun.

If you would like to be part of Rustler's rescue story and are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Michelle Hamed to be considered to adopt Rustler.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
