My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You hear a lot of horror stories in sheltering, unfortunately it is all to common but Lilly's story may be one of our most heartbreaking. Lilly was rescued in the beginning of last year from a meat market overseas. While most of the dogs we have saved from meat markets were to become food we believe Lilly was used for breeding and would eventually have been eaten when no longer able to breed. We can't imagine the things Lilly has been subjected to and seen but what we do know is that it has deeply traumatized her. She is frightened of people she doesn't know and tends to avoid them. She is in no way aggressive or mean just scared. She does better in the company of other dogs and the more confident the dog the better she tends to feel. She will allow staff and volunteers to walk her and touch her but she always looks like she is waiting for someone to hit her. She has made progress and we couldn't be more proud of how hard she tries but it is clear she has been through alot. Lilly would do best in a home with low traffic,, no small kids. a fenced in secure yard with people who understands what she has been through and are willing to walk her and give her time, patience and decompression time. She will run when scared so she is a flight risk so safety is a must with her. She MUST go to a home with a dog in it already. She doesn't seem to mind cats. We see so much protentional in this girl and want her to have a better life then what she had. If you have what it takes to help her please fill out an application on our website AACNJ.ORG

Additional adoption info

Prospective parents fill out a questionnaire, and then speak with an employee at our center. We try to match the families with an appropriate pet, and arrange a "meet and greet" with the family's other pets, if needed.
Our adoption fees vary, while we believe that all of out pets are awesome, we recognize that some breeds are more desirable than others, therefore, those fees may be higher, that gives us the resources to help our medical cases and promotes our harder to place pets. All pets come spayed/neutered, up to date vaccines and microchip.

More about this shelter

We save over 900 lives per year, uniting animals rescued from high kill shelters with families looking for their new best friend. We also operate a neighborhood food bank, providing food and supplies to local citizens who cannot provide for their pets, and would have to give them up without assistance. We operate entirely on donations and money raised in fundraisers, and we have been doing so for more than 30 years!
