    Adoption Fee:  $300.00

Theo is a charming approximately fourteen month-old German Shepherd mix, happy, goofy, and very affectionate, who came to us from a shelter as an unclaimed stray.
He is house-trained and crate trained, usually putting himself to bed around 8:30 or 9, and resting quietly until his foster gets up.  He is very enthusiastic about walks, though is a ways from “heel” yet. He eagerly jumps into the car for rides, and rides well with no carsickness. He settles nicely in the house, provided he has had some play time and a walk.

Theo loves people and attention, though is shy if someone reaches for him too quickly.  Once comfortable, he wants to engage, loves pats, and follows his person around.  He has met and done well with people of all ages including children. He's getting better about it, but still gets a little mouthy when excited, so might not be best for a home with small children.

Theo sits for meals, having the leash put on, going through the door, and whenever else required. He takes treats extremely gently and carefully. He waits for approval to eat, and would rather be with his person than eat, so eats best if his person remains near while he eats.

Chewing at this age is to be expected. He has been really good about selecting appropriate chew toys, but has a weakness for socks, and will relocate shoes left on the floor.  He loves squeaky toys!

Theo has excellent hearing and a great alarm bark when the doorbell rings or someone comes up the walkway. Once his foster responds to the bark by checking the situation, Theo stops barking and will welcome visitors. He does fine in the backyard when his foster is away.

Theo has good energy typical for his age, loves to play rough-and-tumble with other dogs, and will generally try to play with almost every dog he meets. In his foster home with one elderly and one middle-aged female shepherd, he accepts the elderly one’s warnings to leave her alone, but badgers the middle-aged one until she plays. He is very competitive for attention, and is calmest when he is the only dog. He might do well as an only dog who has frequent, regular play dates with other playful dogs.

Theo has not learned to not chase the resident cat, but seems to just want to play, not harm.
There is another side to Theo, which is a scared little boy. He was found running stray with his brother, a more confident dog who was quickly adopted from the shelter. Theo couldn’t ‘find his brave’ at the shelter, and so rescue was needed. He blossomed in a safe, calm and fair home environment. His adopter will need to be slow and patient as Theo settles in, and calm with corrections. Despite his love of walks, he still sometimes submissive urinates when the leash is put on, so it’s best to do that outdoors. Similarly, when he gets frightened, he will sometimes submissive pee. Theo is looking for that very special home that can both enjoy his exuberant youthful personality when he is happy, and be patient, gentle, and calm about corrections or new or scary situations. He will be a fun, intensely loving, and obedient life-long companion in such a home.

    Cats and small critters unknown.

    Level 2

    Understanding Dog Levels

Please be sure you understand what a dog of this Level requires. Go to our home page for an explanation of the Dog Rating Levels. (https://www.gcgsr.org/dogs.html#levels)

    Additional Adoption Information

For more information and to see when this dog will be attending an Adoption Day, please see our Dogs page on our main website. (https://www.gcgsr.org/adopt_info.html) We operate within a reasonable driving distance from the Greater Sacramento area, the Central Valley down to Merced, and Lake Tahoe. A reasonable driving distance is determined by where one of our volunteers is willing to drive within our areas of service. That means we don't adopt out of our area, to Southern California, or out of state.

    Puppy Requirements

We have special Requirements for Adopting a Puppy and a separate Puppy Questionnaire that must be completed on puppies. Please see our Requirements for Adopting a Puppy (https://www.gcgsr.org/puppies.html) email us at info@gcgsr.org for more information.

    Thank you for visiting!

    Their adoption process

    Additional adoption info

    Adoption Fees
Our fees are $350 for Puppies (2-6 months), $300 for Adult Dogs, and $100 for Senior Dogs (9 years & up) and Special Needs Dogs who have ongoing health issues that require treatment. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered (per California State Law), vaccinated, heartworm and fecal tested clear, and most are micro-chipped.

    Home Visit
We require a home visit by one of our own volunteers because we match the home to a specific dog, and we want to meet all members of the household and all other pets at that time, and make sure that environment will work for that dog. The home must be safe and suitable for our dog, and that means we won't adopt to a home with out-of-control children or out-of-control resident dogs.

    Outside Dogs
We rarely place dogs in outside only homes. All of our dogs come out of shelters and into volunteer foster homes where they live in the house with the people. We haven't had much success re-homing them to an outside-only home after that. We believe that dogs are happier living and sleeping inside with their family pack, which has been borne out from many years of bringing dogs into rescue.

    Adoption Requirements
Our Adoption Agreement & Contract is a legal document, therefore we will only adopt to adults, and all the adults in the household must agree to getting the dog. The home must be safe and secure, and legally allowed to have a German Shepherd Dog, and be within the allowable number of dogs. We require landlord consent for renters. The entire household must be a good match for the dog, therefore we won't place a higher Level dog in a lower Level household.

    Puppies
We have special requirements and an additional questionnaire for puppies, please be sure you meet the requirements before sending in an application. Since we see so many dogs that have come out of an unsuitable environment, we want to make sure our puppies have the very best start in life. That means we won't adopt a puppy into an Outside Only home or where the puppy will be alone the majority of the time, as we don't feel that's an optimum environment to raise a happy and well-socialized dog.

    More about this rescue

Greater California German Shepherd Rescue is a 501(c)(3) public charity non-profit. We are an all-volunteer group of German Shepherd lovers dedicated to rescuing German Shepherd Dogs from at-risk and unacceptable situations and finding them permanent, loving homes with qualified owners.

We serve the communities surrounding Modesto, Merced, Greater Sacramento, and South Lake Tahoe, and occasionally parts of the North and East SF Bay area. Except for a portion of Nevada around Lake Tahoe, we don't adopt dogs out of state and rarely adopt out of our area. There are too many other German Shepherds in need of good homes in the other areas.

All of our dogs are in foster homes spread throughout our service areas. We aren't a shelter and don't have a facility. We don't take in strays, we will only deal with the dog's legal owner.
