My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Sophie, the 6-year-old sweetheart with soulful eyes, a gentle heart, and just the right amount of sass to keep you smiling every day.

Sophie is currently living in a foster home where she’s proving herself to be the total package. She’s house and crate trained, sleeps soundly through the night, and knows several commands like sit, lay down, and shake. She also knows her name (and when she’s being just a little onery).

This girl lives for the simple joys:
- Enemy #1 = squirrels. According to Sophie, they’re pure evil. She’s still a work in progress when it comes to learning she doesn’t have to bark at them (especially since the squirrels have realized that when she’s inside, they’re perfectly safe and don’t even bother running away anymore).
- Car rides = her favorite thing in the world. Seriously, don’t even say the word unless you’re ready to grab the keys, because Sophie is already at the door.
- Chick-fil-A = drool city. She recently discovered it, and let’s just say she can’t hide her excitement.
- Fetch = her own rules. Sometimes she’ll bring the ball back like a pro, other times she’ll take a nice, casual stroll to retrieve it—because what’s the rush?
- Walks = confidence builder. She’s worked herself up to mile-long adventures (go Sophie!) but is just as happy with a romp around the backyard or a short neighborhood stroll.

When she gets really excited, Sophie does the most hilarious air chomps because she just can’t contain her joy. She also loves snoozing with her foster grandparents on their porch, tolerates (aka secretly enjoys) her foster family’s cute photoshoots in exchange for treats, and will always remind you that belly rubs are non-negotiable.

At the end of the day, Sophie is affectionate, playful, well-mannered, and just plain lovable. She’s looking for a calm, steady home where she can keep blossoming into the goofy, sweet girl she’s meant to be. She’d just need to meet any kiddos first to make sure it’s a perfect match. Sophie has it all—silliness, sweetness, and loyalty in spades. All she’s missing is you.

Sophie would love to meet any potential canine siblings! Our staff will carefully handle all dog-to-dog introductions at the shelter to ensure a great match. It`s recommended that she not go home with any small dogs or cats, but feel free to bring your pup along when you come to meet her!

Sophie is spayed, microchipped, up to date on her vaccinations, and ready for her fo

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Thanks so much for considering adoption! At KC Pet Project we have no blanket rules. Our goal is to find the pet that is right for YOUR family. The adoption process takes about an hour and does not require you filling out any paperwork ahead of time – you’ll do that once you’ve met someone and decide it’s a good fit. If you have another dog at home, we would like to have a supervised introduction with your pet(s) and our pet. Details about the introduction process can be found below.

You can view all of our adoptable dogs online at – we update their availability and location in real time. If you see them, they are still available for adoption. When you click on their photo it will show their location. There is no appointment needed to visit our pets.

You can visit any of our three locations seven days a week and find a pet that you’re interested in, or meet someone in foster at a mutually agreed upon location. We will have you fill some things out and then go through an adoption interview with a staff member. If all goes well, we’ll send you home with them that day. They’ll have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, have age appropriate vaccines, have been heartworm tested, and have received intestinal dewormer.

Small dogs, puppies, and specialty breeds go quickly here at KC Pet Project. If your schedule allows, you are encouraged to visit our dogs here at the shelter, as we often times have these dogs but they are on stray hold. If you see a pet you are interested in but they are not currently available, you have the option of putting down an Early Bird hold. The EB hold is $50 and $25 of it is a non-refundable donation to us that gives you first right of adoption if the dog is not reclaimed, and the other $25 is deducted from the dog’s adoption fee.

All of our adopters are expected to have a proper leash and collar for their dogs or a carrier to take home cats, which can be found in the retail section of any of our locations. If you live in Kansas City, MO, you should also expect to purchase a city license tag for $12 – this is something you’ll renew each year upon vaccinating your pet.

If you need to introduce your pet(s) to our pet: We recommend visiting an animal first to make sure that it is a good candidate for your home, and so that you have free hands. If you decide you would like to proceed with a meet and greet, please bring your dog to the location where your adoption candidate lives and staff will assist you. If visiting the main shelter, please do not bring your dog into the kennel area. Instead, have someone you trust hold onto your dog and notify a staff member that you are here for the introduction, or you can leave them in your car if it is weather appropriate. KCPP staff will let your dog and our dog drag a leash and greet each other naturally, without you present so that the introduction can be as objective as possible. Please plan on separating your newly adopted dog from your current dog on your drive home (in a kennel, for example), unless you have assistance.

Adoption Fees:
Adult mixed breed dogs: $75-150
Small breed dogs and puppies: $150-300
Cats: $25-$75
Kittens: $50 – $125
