My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Peter is a 3-5 year old Rough Blue Merle neutered Collie boy. Yes, he is stunningly beautiful! But he is not a dog for everyone and will need a special home.

Peter is also one of the "Yolo County dogs" (1 of the 71 confiscated in a cruelty case in September 2004), and therefore has some special requirements for placement. (See The Road Home's website for more information on this case: http://www.theroadhome-dogs.org/collies/).

The most important prerequisite is that Peter can only be placed in a home without children or where children do not frequently visit. Peter was raised in an environment that couldn't have been further from the typical loving pet home and we just can't predict his behavior with enough certainty to place him with kids. In fact, due to his complete lack of socialization, he is not the kind of dog you can just walk out and about, as he can react with fear in unpredictable ways. For that reason and because he is a dog with a high drive, he needs someone who is an experienced dog-handler. Ideally, Peter's new home would include a positive trainer with some experience in training shy dogs; people who are around most of the day; a large yard with a good fence that isn't bordered by other dogs or lots of people passing by (he has a gorgeous and resonant deep-chested bark which he won't hesitate to use if he feels that he needs to tell you about people or other dogs passing by); and a friendly and energetic canine companion, preferably a Collie and preferably a female. He would probably be okay with dog-wise cats. Since he is doing fine in his foster home right now, we are holding out for a forever home that meets that wish list as closely as possible.

If you're still reading, here's some information about what Peter is like… he is a thoroughly charming and affectionate boy who LOVES to play. After living a miserable life in a kennel, he is in awe of all the great stuff out there to entertain him and doesn't hesitate much in exploring this great big new world. ("Oh, a cell phone?...never seen that before… hmmm… I can't quite bite through it, but the leather case tastes good!") Peter, as mentioned above, is also what we call a "high drive" dog, which means he is NOT your typical "laid-back" pet Collie and would be unsuitable as such. There is no mistaking that he is a handful and a half, but as much as that is true, for the right person, he would be worth every bit of the trouble. Peter has a genuine sparkle in his eye and a zest for life that is absolutely endearing and so very rewarding to work with. He enjoys his clicker training, going in the van for a ride, and will carefully step into his harness one foot at a time for a walk. When he's not horsing around or taking every toy out of the dog toy box, he is being Mr. Love Sponge. His favorite thing is to come up to you and gently put his immaculate white Collie paw in your hand, so he can get his arm rubbed. Surprisingly enough, he housetrained himself, and surreptitiously uses the doggie door to do his potty! He is still very shy around strangers, and has many issues to work out, stemming from his misspent youth of course, but we think he is the type of dog who would do really well in something like agility, and that at the same time, it would build his confidence.
