My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Venus came in with several other cats from a difficult situation. She’s shy, but does open up if you go very slowly with her. Once she gets to know you, she will purr with petting and sometimes even make biscuits to show her contentment. Since first introductions are hard for this girl, we’ve added her to our Cactus Cat program so she can get support from volunteers through clicker training. Venus is learning to do “nose boops” where she will touch her nose to her trainer’s finger and get a reward, which is often a Delectables Squeeze-up! This practice will help her to build confidence in her interactions with people. Venus is still learning, so she will need a patient adopter willing her to give her plenty of time to get adjusted in a new place. She may prefer a quieter home with less foot-traffic, and a confident feline friend to show her that things aren’t so scary.

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

Go meet their pets

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00am to 7:00pm. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
