Get To Know Mango
Mango ACCT-A-154938 is a 3-year-old male Pitbull that came into the shelter as a stray on 1/2/24. Mango came in with a back left leg injury that got better over time and shortly after Mango got to ACCT he quickly settled in and showed his high energy and goofy and cuddly personality.
During his stay he did acquire an upper respiratory infection but after finding foster placement on 1/18/24 he was able to recover very well from his upper respiratory infection!
On 2/2/24 his foster reached out to us after noticing his limp has returned. Later that day the foster reached out again when Mango refused to go outside and became less mobile. The foster noted that he was pain, so Mango came in to be seen and we were able to get x-rays.
Mango got TPLO surgery on 3/20 and expenses were covered by ACCT. Mango is now in search of rescue placement as his foster is unable to continue to provide care for him. Mango needs additional surgery because of re-luxation of his patella. His additional surgery would be covered by an external grant that can be transferred to the rescue that takes him. This grant allows the rescue to use the vet of their choosing.

I touched base with [the surgeon] as well as a few other surgeons to discuss Mango, since re-luxation of the patella is obviously a concern in general for this type of surgery and now that Mango has already re-luxated once, we want to be as aggressive as possible to try and keep that patella in place the second time around.
I know I had initially suggested intervening with the soft tissues sooner rather than later, but [the surgeon] mentioned that he's had a couple cases where although the alignment looks appropriate on x-rays, further bony intervention is still sometimes helpful to prevent reluxation. Given this, I think we should wait until Mango has healed from his TPLO, and then proceed with revision of the MPL. We can't perform further bony interventions until the TPLO has healed.

Mango seems to have hurt what looks like his back left knee-the same leg of his previous foot injury. I am unsure of when and how this occurred as there has been no obvious injury. He is inconsistent with bearing weight on this leg and is walking with an obvious limp. He does not appear to be in pain and is otherwise acting his typical self-eating, drinking and being his typical playful self. I gave him some new toys this evening to assist with keeping him stationary and off his back leg.
He is no longer wanting to go out to use the bathroom or really even get up. He has had several accidents in the home today already. He is in pain. Mango only has 2 toes on his left paw, indicating an injury to his foot/ leg previously of some kind. I do not know what occurred to cause him this injury. He is a very active, bouncy young dog who runs and jumps on/off beds and couches and in our backyard. So, it is unknown.

She is a caregiver for a woman with Down Syndrome, 61 years old, Mango has extensive energy levels, requires a lot of training and support. The hospital gave him ace and traz for sedation given his energy levels, but even with that medication she can't just crate him and have him barking all the time. He was "so out of his mind last night that she thought he was going to bite her" (he was on increased ace and codeine at this point, seemed to have adverse reaction). Now he is off that medication and she has not seen the same behavior at all. She hasn't been sleeping because of everything she has going on. He is keeping her up all night, highest energy level that she's ever seen in a dog since he is on exercise restrictions due to his surgery. Using Kongs, Bully box, lick mats. Suggested puzzle toys, sweet potatoes or pumpkins as edible kongs, virtual training, and possible in person training. Will also try for temp foster - she is committed to him but he is keeping her up at night and she would like a temp break so she can sleep.

I unfortunately am going to have to bring Mango back to ACCT this week following an incident that just occurred in which he nipped my boyfriend's son's face while petting him. The kid was being very gentle with Mango, and I was sitting right next to them supervising while this happened. This was just too close of a call, and I can't continue to risk it as I'm also a caregiver for a woman with special needs.
Mango is a good dog and deserves a good loving home, but I am just not able to provide that given my circumstances. I do not recommend Mango going to a home with young children at this point.

They were all sitting on the bed and Mango just calmly nipped at the kids face, barely pinched his lip - had a swollen lip. Has been very good with Mango and was surprised by the provoke. She said he is good with people, just not kids right now due to learning manners. His bite inhibition is improving. He is a great dog who is very playful and loves toys. He is a cuddle bug who loves to be with his people. He also enjoys being outside in the yard or on walks. He is learning leash manners with a harness. He is interested in other dogs but hasn't been allowed to greet them due to his injury, he barks but seems to be curious. He is crate trained and sleeps in there since he isn't allowed to jump on the bed right now. He very rarely has accidents, but when he does it is likely due to his medications. He is very treat motivated and has learned sit, stay, come, roll over, and his name with the help of Good Pup. In the past he did good at a birthday party in their home with a lot of children and adults.

Playgroup 1/4
Mango was reactive at the gate and was frustrated the longer he would wait. Once in the yard he was loose and very goofy! He took corrections from Jade well and tried to engage in push and pull chase play with the other dogs. He did try to mount multiple dogs as time went on and is sexually motivated. He took corrections without issue but was also keen to ignore them and continue his advances.

Mango had a great meet today with potential adopters. He is a sweet boy who knows sit and takes treats gently for the most part. He is high energy and loves attention.

This bouncy boy sure is a fun one.
He loves a good treat and while he is very enthusiastic about them he takes them super gently! Mango enjoys playing and is often running around excitedly, a big yard or an active pal who loves to play would be ideal for this fella. He'll repay your match to his energy with his love bug ways, stepping in your lap for all over scratches.
