My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MIKA is a ten-month old tan and black shepherd mix. She weighs 31 pounds. She arrived at the county shelter with a wound to her forehead from a bullet. In spite of her early trauma she is a very loving, happy, and playful dog. She enjoys showing off her mastery of the sit command. MIKA loves leash walks and playing with other dogs. She has most of “fetch” figured out and is very willing to learn new things. She has been spayed, micro chipped, and is up to date on her vaccines. Additional adoption info

We require a minimum adoption donation of $150 to $250 depending on the dog and the amount of money we have invested in vet care. Our application form asks adopters to certify that they have a fenced yard or that the pet will be kept indoors and that the pet will be maintained on heartworm and flea preventative and kept up to date on annual shots. The application also asks adopters to certify that they will ask Animal Lovers for assistance in rehoming the pet in the event they cannot keep it for some reason at any time in the future.

Go meet their pets

Because we are a small all-volunteer rescue group our pets must be seen by appointment. Your first step in adopting one of our pets is to call our Shelter Director Margaret at 8438693869 or email martowe514@gmail.com to request an appointment to meet our dogs. You will be asked to fill out an adoption application. All information on the application must be completed including phone numbers and a vet reference (an old one, or a reason why there is not one) before it will be processed.

More about this shelter

We are a small 501(C)(3) registered SC Non Profit Charity made up of a group of volunteers who primarily help stray and found dogs in nearby communities in Charleston and Colleton Counties. We are also a Rescue partner with Colleton County Animal Shelter in Walterboro. We exist solely from donations and fund raisers. There is sometimes a paid part time staff members to help out when volunteers are away on vacations or other family matters. Our volunteers who do this because they love dogs. We take in abandoned and stray dogs when notified, and we accept stray dogs that show up at people's homes or are picked up on the side of the road by locals and tourists alike. We only accept pet surrenders in unusual situations. We help people rehome their pets through Petfinder.com, Adoptapet.com and other social media. We pull dogs from Colleton County Animal Shelter to help them reduce their euthanasia rate. Our primary mission is to provide veterinary care, food, shelter and love to get our rescues healthy and socialized enough to be adopted. This includes an initial vet exam, heartworm test, shots, medicines, and spaying or neutering. Volunteers pet, play and walk our rescues at least twice a day. Rescues not in foster homes are kept in a covered outdoor shelter located on Edisto Island. Our rescues can be seen on our Facebook page, Adoptapet.com and Petfinder.com, and by appointment.
