My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Venus von Vilseck is a beautiful, 2-year-old, smaller-sized Shepherd-mix. She is not your typical Shepherd-mix. She is smaller than most of her breed but has a big heart and a gentle personality. This beauty loves to go for walks and sniff the world around her. She is calm and well-behaved on the leash, staying close to her human. She also enjoys walking with other dogs and meeting them face-to-face. Venus is not aggressive or dominant, but rather friendly and respectful. She has a medium energy level and likes to relax after a good walk. A sweet and affectionate girl who may be shy at first, she quickly warms up to people. A special pleasure is to have her ears and butt rubbed, and she will lean against you while you pet her. She is a loyal and loving companion who will make you feel special. Venus is still learning her basic commands, but she is eager to please and takes treats very gently. She is a smart and curious girl who likes to explore new things. Venus is not a fan of pushy dogs who get in her face - she prefers calm and respectful ones who give her some space. An OK greeter with calm dogs, she likes to keep to herself and mingle with other dogs at her own pace. Venus is not a cat-friendly dog, so she needs a home without feline buddies. This wonderful girl is looking for a loving family where a calm and sweet companion like herself will brighten their day with her beauty and charm. If you are looking for a loyal and gentle friend, Venus is the one for you.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
