My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sgt. Pepper is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet him during open hours!

Sgt. Pepper has always pulled at our heartstrings. Two years ago, we first saw this sweet angel in one of our partner shelters in Michigan where he wound up after he was filmed being abused by his previous owners. The owner was charged with animal abuse and "Peppers" was brought to Heartland for a fresh start. He was with us for many months before he was adopted. Sadly, his adopter recently returned him due to some major life changes.

In the months he was at Heartland before being adopted, he was known as our big marshmallow and was a favorite for volunteers to walk - even newer volunteers who are still gaining experience walking large dogs. He is a gentle soul, but he does react to some dogs, so he is best walked away from other animals - he really is just a more people oriented dog, and wants to give you all his attention.

Sgt. loves toys and never tears them up, just plays with them ever so gently. Sometimes he tosses them around and then we glance over and see him give us a huge smile! He loves to be told he is a good boy - he is very motivated by praise from the ones he loves!

When word got out that Sgt was being returned to us, he had several foster offers from our volunteer base who knew and loved him. That should tell you something! Two of Sarge's biggest fans are David and Nikki, who stepped up to foster this sweet boy and even had him join their maternity photo shoot!

Below is what they have to say about their time so far with Sarge.

"Sergeant Pepper is a loyal and athletic gentleman. When he gets to know you, he loves to observe you and sit quietly beside you. He is a great mirror in the sense that he matches your energy perfectly. When you are crazy with him, he goes crazy with you, and when you are calm with him, he is calm with you. The Sergeant is very respectful of your space but will gladly invade it when invited. He may be a bit slow to warm up, but once you gain his trust, he is the most loyal companion."

Since the fosters were imminently expecting a baby, Sarge is back at our shelter. If you are interested in fostering or adopting this sweet boy, let us know!

Sgt. Peppers's adoption fee has been generously sponsored! He is neutered, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.
