My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an adoption pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need.

“Scratch a dog and you’ll find a permanent job.” – Franklin P. Jones (humorist)

Hunter has placed a help wanted ad with SGRR. "In search of a personal belly scratcher to spend the rest of my life with. Must have a large supply of treats and be able to walk a few miles with me daily. "

Handsome Hunter has all the qualities that make Golden Retrievers as popular as they are! He was tearfully surrendered to our rescue because one of the children in his family experienced a traumatic encounter with another dog. Although Hunter had been with this family for over two years, the young child could not get beyond her fear.

Hunter lived with another dog in his prior home, a 100 lb German Shepherd mix in Louisiana. His dad told us that Hunter and Scout loved to play together and Hunter loves to fetch. While Hunter and Scout played well together, meals were given separately because the German Shepherd ate quicker than Hunter and would try to get to Hunter's food, which Hunter did not appreciate.

Hunter has been trained on invisible fencing and obeyed its borders well. Hunter grew up with children, but we feel he might be too exuberant for little tykes. We will seek an adult-only home for him or a home with older kids. He is a happy and energetic dog who, like many rescued dogs, can use a brush-up course on manners. No worries though because he is super smart and wants to please.

Hunter was born in July of 2021, making him 2.5 years old. He is a stunning 80 lb purebred Golden Retriever with a beautiful golden coat. Hunter is neutered (you can see him wearing the donut in some of his pictures to keep his stitches intact), vaccinated, microchipped, and negative for heartworm. He was kept on Simparica Trio and given regular vet care. Please contact Cheryl if you are already approved to adopt through SGRR and would like to respond to Hunter's help-wanted ad. If not yet approved, please fill out an application to be considered. Hunter is in a foster home in the northeast and is waiting to meet you! Hmmmm, could YOU be the person Hunter chooses to be his new BFF?

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to take on whatever comes with the dog. It is up to YOU to continue the rehabilitation we have begun. This is what it means to rescue.

If you would like to be part of Hunter's rescue story and are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Cheryl Kewley to be considered to adopt Hunter.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
