My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Umbrella Cockatoo Frank Age: 26 years, hatch date 9/24/1997 Gender: Male (reportedly via dna sexing; copy of dna certificate not included with vet recs provided to GDU).

Minimum cage size: 40" wide x 30" deep. An even better choice is a 48" x 36", or a 64" x 32" "double" cage. This pet is not suitable for apartment living because of their loud vocalizations.

STOP! Have you previously owned or cared for an Umbrella Cockatoo? This bird craves attention, a lot of attention. If it doesn’t get the attention it wants it will find ways of expressing its displeasure. They may express themselves vocally, loudly, repeatedly. They may chew/destroy furniture, woodwork and paperwork, usually the furniture, woodwork and paperwork you least want chewed or destroyed. They are messy eaters. Much of their food will end up at the bottom of their cage or on the floor. Cleaning up after parrots is a daily responsibility. They can bite. They will bite. Their bite strength can be up to 350 PSI. This is not a pet for small children. They are LOUD. Average human conversation is around 60 decibels. Umbrella Cockatoos’ can screech at 100-135 decibels. Imagine an air raid siren going off next to you.

With good care, they may live 70+ years. An owner should have a care plan in place in the event the bird outlives the owner. It’s important to have a veterinarian experienced with exotic/avian care. If you are still reading this, let me tell you about Frank. He is a gorgeous bird, snowy white with an impressive crest and pale yellow color under his wings. He knows some words and frequently says “Hi Frank” and “Hello”. Frank loves to be the center of attention though he is reserved around strangers and is selective about whether he wants to be picked up. He may take some time to adjust to a new home. He responds well to patience and positive reinforcement. Frank is a messy eater. He loves to climb around his cage, both inside and outside. If he’s not getting sufficient attention, he will start screaming. Umbrella Cockatoos tend to be social and affectionate. They are intelligent creatures and may learn some tricks. This is a pet that can be your devoted companion.

At the time you are seeing this post, this bird is still available for adoption. But please know that we may be working on multiple applications already, and any one of them could be approved at any time. Please READ THIS ENTIRE DESCRIPTION and complete an adoption application if you are interested in any of our animals. The application can be found at www.greendogsunleashed.org. If you send an inquiry to ask if the bird is still available, or just tell us you are interested, your inquiry will not be answered. FILL OUT AN APPLICATION. We can do NOTHING without that. We cannot tell you if he would be a match for your family without seeing an application, but if/when your application is approved, we can set up a meet and greet with the foster in person or over video or phone so that you can both determine if it is a good match for both Frank and your family. Our goal is not to quickly adopt out animals but rather to find the perfect placement for every animal in our care.

*/*/* PLEASE NOTE: If we need additional information to process your application, we will send an email to request the information. Please check your inbox AND spam folders for this email. We will not begin processing an application without the information requested in that email. */*/*

We are happy to consider applicants from out of state on most animals. Please read the description to see if this bird is an exception. If the applicant is approved to adopt, they MUST be willing to come to our location in Troy, VA, for a meet and greet. If all parties agree that the bird and family are a good fit, they would take the bird home at that time.

For more information about our mission and for an APPLICATION for adoption, please go to www.greendogsunleashed.org. The minimum donation fee for this bird is $400. This does not even come close to covering all expenses created by animals while in rescue. We are funded solely by the angels and volunteers willing to donate time and finances.
