Hamilton (Hammie) was found in the bushes of an apartment building and brought to the shelter. He was badly injured, unable to use his back legs - maybe hit by a car? The shelter’s vet did x-rays that told a different story. There were multiple injuries - broken ribs, broken shoulder, broken vertebrae, etc. - but they were all showing different ages of healing indicating that they were not incurred at the same time - possible abuse? We waited for his stray hold to expire, but in the mean time someone showed up to claim him. We held our breath, and the shelter convinced the supposed owner to surrender him to the shelter. We pulled him into foster care shortly after that. Hammie has made a remarkable recovery from his injuries.

He is a sweet little guy - cautious around strangers, but tends to bond fairly quickly. He can be a little high-strung - barrier guarding issues in a crate or pen - a lot of barking when he sees other dogs. He loves snuggling with and getting attention from his people (admittedly maybe annoyingly so, but he eventually settles down). He can also be a little mouthy (almost puppy-like) having your arm, wrist, hand, fingers in his mouth seems to be somewhat comforting for him.

Although, he is in a foster home with lots of other dogs and is around a lot of dogs at adoption events, we are not sure if he would be a good fit in a home with other dogs - he can get a little grouchy with them (lap guarding, get out of my space, etc.)

Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We specialize in "hard to place dogs" due to their breed, age, minor behavioral or medical conditions. We strive to keep our fees reasonable ($125), and we have sponsorship funds to help with fees, if needed.

After the application is approved, the prospective adopter must take the dog on a trial-basis "sleepover" for a few days, before finalizing the adoption.

We require landlord approval if the applicant is renting their living space.

We only do adoptions in San Francisco Bay Area and surrounding regions.

We DO NOT adopt to families with children under the age of 13.

More about this rescue

We specialize in finding homes for dogs where “imperfection” is tolerated in exchange for a lifetime of love and devotion.

Our foster dogs have been discarded by the people they once trusted, only to find themselves in a shelter with no other options.

We want them to have a second chance to receive the love and care they deserve.
