My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Shadow-at-a-glance: 1-1/2 year old, male, neutered Pit Bull Terrier, 56 lbs., up-to-date on core vaccines, microchipped and heartworm negative. Shadow takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention.

Shadow came to LOVEPAWS from the PG County shelter where he was down to his last hours before being scheduled for euthanasia. He went into his foster home already knowing 'sit' 'drop' and 'no' and responds to his name when called. We learned after he came to LOVEPAWS that his name with his previous owner was Shadow so we're happy to keep something familiar to him when everything else in his life is new.

Shadow's dream day would include running beside and wrestling with other dogs, giving some kisses to his favorite people and hearing that he's a good boy over and over. After all of that excitement, he would love to end his day on the couch next to his people with a chew or squeaky toy and then settle down to sleep in the same bed as them.

Shadow wants to be everybody's friend and really loves to play with other dogs. He has met a few kids since being in his foster home and has gently greeted them and enjoyed having them pet him. On walks he often stops and stares at birds, squirrels and deer and will pull towards them if they move, but only seems to want to be their playmate if they would only let him! Shadow has had several play dates with a slightly smaller female pit bull where they alternate tearing around the yard and wrestling with each other. Inside the house, it only takes him a few minutes to settle next to his people and fall asleep.

More about this rescue

LOVEPAWS was founded as an animal intake prevention program to help keep pets in homes and out of shelters. To do this, we offer various types of assistance to pet owners including our pet food pantry and our re-homing service. We help find new homes for pets whose owners cannot keep them but do not want to surrender their pet to the shelter. While our focus is on Prince George’s County, MD, we offer these services to the entire DC Metro area.

Our scope and mission has grown quickly since we were founded in 2019 and we now pull dogs and cats from open-admission, high-intake shelters in MD, VA and other Southern states. This has expanded our rescue to be able to save dogs and cats of all breeds. Our expanded mission is to save the lives of abandoned dogs and cats and place them in loving and permanent homes. While we are a non-breed-specific rescue, we are a pittie-friendly rescue that has a soft spot for the pit bulls at the Prince George’s County animal shelter. They face the heartbreaking reality of the county’s pit bull ban which makes them unavailable for adoption to the public. We are committed to stepping forward whenever we can and wherever there is the greatest need.

LOVEPAWS is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are an exclusively foster-based rescue with our foster network spanning MD, DC, and VA.
