My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MEET SPAULDING the PEKINGESE!!!
North New Jersey

Spaulding is a 2 year old, 18 lb. male black and white parti CKC Registered Pekingese with the coolest tail that flips black-white from side to side! This little guy is SUPER sweet and he LOVES being with his people and giving hugs and kissies. He is VERY playful with toys and other pups. He can be rambunctious and would do well with a furry playmate of equal size and strength.

He is a very good listener and knows some commands. He is housebroken and looks to his person for guidance. He knows the routine in the home well. He was bought as a puppy into a home with three young children. Unfortunately, now that he is bigger he does not appreciate being man-handled by small kids and he has bite history with the kids in the home (not his fault!).

Thus, Spaulding needs a kid-free home (no young kids living or visiting--teenagers and up ok) where he can continue to thrive. In his foster home he has been the sweetest most well-behaved little guy. He was wonderful at the groomer and at the vet. He loves everyone he meets and promptly jumps in your lap and gives kissies.

Spaulding has been brought UTD, neutered, chipped, dewormed, he is HW and Lyme negative, had allergy testing, and is housebroken. He also knows how to use potty pads if they are available. He is allergic to chicken and doing well on a lamb-based kibble. He will go home with a bag of his kibble.

Given his high energy level, a fenced in yard is required as is another fur sibling he can romp with. He really enjoys playing and hanging out with his fur friends and does well having another doggie friend (or more) to hang out with. He happens to do extremely well with Bodie who is also for adoption.

Breed experience is preferred and will be prioritized (or similar brachycephalic breeds).

Adoption donation is $550.

We only process complete applications and providing false information immediately disqualifies you from adopting.

ABOUT OUR PROCESS:
WE ONLY CONTACT APPLICANTS WITH WHOM WE WANT TO MOVE FORWARD. We typically get in touch within 24-48 hours, but it may take up to 10 days. Please watch your email and answer your phone (from 201 area code) after you submit an application. Unfortunately, we do not have the manpower to reply to all applicants.

We also do not have the manpower to accept phone calls. Everything we know about the dog is posted above. Our adoption process is on our website. You can see more about our daily operations on our Facebook page.

PLEASE give your vet office permission to speak with rescues if you are applying to adopt from any rescue. Ask them to mark your file. If they will not speak with us, we will move on to the next application and you will not be considered.

We consider out-of-area adoptions on a case-by-case basis. All meet & greets and adoptions are held in north New Jersey, and we do not transport our pups. You must come to NJ. We also do not “hold” dogs. It is “first qualified, first come” and our expectation is you will move quickly to conduct the meet & greet if you are approved. An approved application does not guarantee adoption of any dog from our rescue, and we reserve the right to deny adoption at any point during the process.

Go meet their pets

Since we are 100% foster based, all meet and greets are conducted in the foster's home or the potential adopter's home. Due to their age, we do not subject our tiny seniors to adoption events.

More about this rescue

The Gingerbread House is a sanctuary and rescue for Pekingese and similar small-breed dogs. We focus on senior and hospice pups that require experienced fosters and adopters, or that are not adoptable due to their age, health, or special needs. Many of these dogs have been neglected physically, medically, and emotionally. Some have been surrendered due to their age or medical needs, others come from severe neglect-hoarding situations, and others from backyard breeders and puppy mills.

We assist owners who need to surrender their special pups and we work to ensure a positive experience during this emotional time. It is never an easy decision to part with a furry loved one and we understand that sometimes it is in the pup’s best interest.

We also partner with local shelters and rescues to take in these precious souls so they are not euthanized. After all these little ones have been through, they deserve a chance to live their remaining days knowing love and care, a soft clean bed, quality food, and a life without pain, filth, and starvation.

Adoptable dogs remain in our loving foster homes during rehabilitation and vetting, while we work to find their new furever families. Unadoptable pups remain in our sanctuary where they spend their remaining days being cared for and loved. We will never give up on them and will work to give them the best life possible. While in our care we provide for their needs including ongoing veterinary care, medication, supplements, food, continence care, and grooming.

The Gingerbread House is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in north New Jersey. We are run by volunteers and fosters and rely solely on donations to provide for these sweet dogs in their golden years. As a public charity, all donations are 100% tax deductible and 100% of donations go to the dogs.

Please reach out if you are interested in fostering or volunteering. It will help save a life!
