My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Affectionate, loyal and a little bit velcro!

He is a loving companion who forms strong bonds with his humans - once trust is established - it takes time for Zuco to warm up, but once he does he'll be your shadow until the moment you sit down, when he'll crawl up on your lap and snuggle in. But he is not all snuggles, he loves running and playing fetch and he is great at food enrichment-puzzle games and he hasn't met one that he can't beat yet!

His foster family says he can be fractious and protective when unknown people come to the door, but with the proper introduction he is less nervous and vocal. Zuco needs some work on his reactivity toward other dogs and some people. His foster has begun to work on these behaviours through positive reinforcement and his adopter will have to continue to as well. In addition, Zuco will "resource guard" items that he thinks are valuable to you. Ideally, Zuco's adopter will have experience dealing with this behaviour and be prepared to apply a consistent approach to managing him. If not managed properly, Zuco can lash out.

ABOUT ZUCO:
- Zuco is a 6 year old, Cockapoo, approximately 25 lbs
- Zuco came to EHS as an owner who surrendered him due to relocation overseas
- He is happiest with human company but when left alone he has not shown any signs of separation anxiety
- Zuco loves the car and behaves well
- Zuco likes to learn and already knows obedience cues, such as sit, stay, and waiting for an okay before eating
- Zuco does not always like to be touched and this means that groomer and vet visits can be more complicated - and Zuco's adopter needs to be able to respect these boundaries
- Zuco is neutered, house-trained, crate-trained, microchipped, and up to date on core vaccinations

ZUCO'S IDEAL HOME:
- Zuco would thrive in a home where someone is frequently present, as he craves companionship
- Zuco needs to go to an adopter who is not a first-time dog owner, and who has the patience and experience to instill in Zuco the confidence he needs
- He must be the only pet in a household
- He should go to a home without children, this includes infrequent visits by children
- He would benefit from continued training and mental stimulation to work on his reactivity and resource-guarding behaviours and we will provide support through a trainer

If you believe you can offer Zuco the loving home he deserves, please fill out our online adoption application. Pre-approved applicants will have the opportunity to meet Zuco. For inquiries about Zuco or our adoption process, please contact our adoption coordinator at jenc.ehs@gmail.com
