My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

The Vince we know today has already undergone such an unbelievable evolution from the one that arrived on the farm. He had an at-times snappy aversion to touch. He trembled, hid and withdrew, the results of past trauma we wouldn't want to imagine. Thanks to patience, freedom of choice, and some encouragement from his doggie friends, Vince has allowed us to peel back the layers and show his funny inner personality.

If this little guy knows one thing for sure it's that he likes to stay active. After a period of familiarization with the presence of the leash and the motion of putting on said leash, Vince has grown to become quite the walking partner. He can often be found on pack walks with his head held high as he surveys his surroundings. When he's not out on a stroll, Vince can be found zipping around the play yard with his friends...though he's not quite sure how to do this whole "play" thing just yet and will happily take a break from the action to explore his environment on his own. Vince also loves his toys; it brings such joy to watch him toss them about with a jolly demeanor that can't help but make you giggle.

Vince still has a great deal of learning to do in how to be a pet dog. The structure we have provided, paired with a gentle approach, has allowed him to understand where he fits in the daily routine. Though he has become quite bold in his now comfortable surroundings, we know it will take a great deal of patience to welcome Vince into an unfamiliar environment. A home that is dedicated to continuing his growth (a process that is both highly challenging and highly rewarding) would be what's needed for this delightfully playful yet still highly uncertain little guy to blossom into his fullest potential.

Application Submission
Our application is designed to help us get to know you, the type for dog that would best fit your home & the particular qualities you are looking for in the dog you want to make a member of your family. All of us at Love Dogs spend a great deal of quality time with every dog in our care. We've had the honor of befriending hundreds of dogs, each one unique and beautiful.. As a result we have learned an incredible amount about dogs in general and what it is they like about people! The more we know about you, the better we will be at match making! When you submit your application, please ask your references to call our Reference Hotline at 845-204-8253 to leave their recommendation on our reference voicemail.

Application Processing
Once your references have left their recommendations on our system, we will be able to complete processing on your application, after which, we will be in touch to discuss next steps, answer & ask any lingering questions and plan the path ahead! Once approved we will contact you to schedule a meet and greet!

Meet & Greet
Its exciting for everyone, you the dogs and staff to gather for a meeting! Dogs do best if they are left in charge of the actual approach and subsequent greeting. We suggest that you arrive.. deep breaths.. as calm, open minded and light hearted as you can.. dogs pick up on energy first and foremost. This initial meeting will provide a lot of information about you to the dogs you meet. We will guide you through the language each dog is sharing so that your initial encounter will set the stage for a foundation of trust. When bringing children it is especially important to discuss with them what their role will be during the meet. We can provide you with an easy child friendly outline!

Please be aware that some lucky dogs may receive several inquiries and applications. We strive to honor the order in which we receive applications and simultaneously do our best to ensure great happily-ever-after matches! We require all immediate family members to attend a Meet & Greet before being able to move forward to adoption. There are times it takes multiple visits to establish your best match and get everyone off to a best ever start. How you begin this relationship strongly influences what will lay ahead. We make ourselves available to help in every way possible!

Medical Information
Each dog in our care gets a second thorough physical exam, necessary tests and medical care upon arriving to New York in addition to their initial routine exam at time of departure from shelter. Any areas of concern are thoroughly investigated and addressed with the dog's best interest in mind. The basics every dog receives are:
Current distemper, parvo, bordetella & rabies vaccines
Monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives
Age appropriate spay/neuter
Microchip
Because we do rescue a variety of dogs, some who may not have had proper care or nutrition may require such "extras" as dental cleaning, eye exam, orthopedic surgery etc. We like to send our dogs off to their new homes in the best possible health. We share everything we know about every dog with every adopter! You will be given full medical records on your dog on the day you adopt. We will gladly discuss any aspect with you at any time.

Adoption
All adoptions include a full hour of educational discussion with one of our experienced adoption counselors. You will see and experience demonstrations about dog body language and how best to understand and communicate with your dog as well as what you will be helpful to know before bringing your new family member home.

The adoption fee is $375.00. Donations are ALWAYS welcome!

We operate under(and work together with) SPCA of Westchester so all checks and donations should be written to them.

Post Adoption Support
Adoption is the just the beginning of what we all hope will be a lovely journey with your dog, full of meaning and deep connection. The transition to home life may add some surprising new experiences, for you and your dog. We are quite familiar with the sort of things that may arise and can help you to find simple solutions that will keep things going well! Please don't hesitate to call on us for support. We want to hear from you no matter what. We find all updates to be both reassuring and heart warming. Everyone understands that all relationships can at times require education, patience and work. You and your dog(s) can count on us to be there for support! Oh, and we REALLY enjoy photo updates more than you can imagine!!

More about this rescue

We are a small, hands on organization that specializes in rescuing dogs who are often overlooked.. Mama dogs, older dogs, dogs in need of medical attention & dogs who may for whatever reason, require a little extra time.. more observation, deeper connection and reasons to trust the people making decisions for them.
Each relationship begins with a fresh start. Every dog is unique and every dog in our care is heard, appreciated and respected. We consciously and continuously open our own hearts and minds so we can clearly see and respond to the dog that is present before us. Dogs may come to us afraid, defensive or checked out but thankfully with proper care, handling and love they transform and as they do we relate to that dog and not the dog who was!
Our rescue is located on the grounds of a serene and magnificent, private horse farm in Westchester County NY.
Not only does the farm provide a sanctuary for homeless dogs it also provides sanctuary for special equines in need.
Part of the magic here has to do with the integrity of our mission. Our combined efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home animals stem from a foundation of respect, kindness, clear intention and a humble desire to learn from every animal in our care.
