My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please go to our website at www.milehighlabmission.com to find out more about this pet and to submit an adoption application.

Please DO NOT call or email us; all information about current dogs available, adoption donations, vetting, and this specific dog are on our website.

We are a non-profit organization and we are completely 100% volunteer run.

We DO NOT have a shelter and only approved applicants can make appointments with our foster homes to meet the dogs we have.

Our volunteers will not discuss dogs we have available for adoption UNTIL you have an application on file and are approved to adopt.

"I like big dogs and I cannot lie" If you're singing this remix, you don't want to miss out on Kaya -- 86lbs of fluffy perfection!

Personality | Kaya is a sweet and loving girl with a smile and soulful eyes that make anyone who meets her fall head over heels! She loves to be by your side and give you hugs! She will jump up on people, but in a gentle way without putting her full weight on you, so she doesn't knock you over! She's a typical large breed that doesn't realize she's a large breed. ;) Her foster family is teaching her that she doesn't get pets and attention when she jumps and she's learning what "down" means. She loves people and will let out happy whimpers when her foster family gets home. She has a lot of love to give to whoever is lucky enough to adopt her and clearly gets attached to her people quickly. :) Her breed is unknown, but she could easily be a purebred great pyr based on her beautiful white coat, giant size, and calm demeanor. Anyone interested should read up on the breed before adopting. Don't miss out on this amazing girl!

Story | Rescued from a NM shelter.

Other Dogs | She is friendly and playful with small dogs and large dogs. She prefers to be fed separate from other dogs.

Cats | She is fostered with a cat. She loves the kitty and has been gentle with him.

Children | Friendly! She's very calm and likes to calmly sit by her humans for pets. She's already eye level with most kids so she probably wouldn't jump on them and is calm enough that she likely wouldn't accidently knock any children down when excited. Her excitement usually comes in the form of getting right up next to you for pets! She's also been very tolerant of her foster mom bathing her and brushing out very matted hair, which means she likely will be very tolerant of little kids being in her space.

Training | Kaya is a very intelligent dog. She is quickly learning basic commands like sit, down and stay. She sleeps through the night in the crate as long as the crate is in the bedroom where she can see you.
Kaya hasn't been destructive at all and has done fine when left roaming the house alone for a few hours. She does like to counter surf (and can reach everything), but all she has grabbed from the counters are dishes to lick clean and hasn't chewed any of them up. She is the perfect motivator to wash the dishes instead of letting them sit in the sink! She will bark when she hears loud noises outside or someone knocks on the door, which is typical for her breed since they were bred to guard. Interested adopters should read up on the breed and understand their tendency to bark to scare away predators and protect their livestock (aka their humans)!

Leash | She walks very well on the leash and it's usually a "loose leash." When she does occasionally pull, it isn't with her full strength. So far, she has never pulled hard enough where it's difficult to keep hold of the leash, despite her size! She walks much better on the leash then her much smaller foster brother and is mostly just happy to be by your side. She has not shown any reactivity on the leash towards other dogs, squirrels or people and probably would do just fine tagging along on hikes and to breweries!

Activity Level  Low - medium. Great Pyrenees require regular exercise and mental stimulation. They are bred to protect livestock and are very loyal to their families. She has done well with a few 15-30 minute walks a day and mostly just wants to hang out by your side. She usually naps on the wood floor near the humans, probably because it's cooler then the dog bed with her thick coat!

Health Notes | Healthy! She is up to date on vaccinations, spayed and heartworm negative! She has a beautiful, white coat and will need regular brushing to keep it from matting. She's very tolerant to getting groomed, even when brushing out sensitive spots. She was underweight at intake, but has a healthy appetite and is quickly getting where she needs to be. She hadn't been weighed recently, but she is probably heavier than 86 lbs now.

Thank you!

Adoption Donations |  Our adoption donations are $475 for dogs 8 weeks to 1 year, $425 for 1-6 years, $375 for dogs 7-10 years, and $250 for 11+ years of age. Purebred dogs regardless of age are $525. These minimum donations help to defer the costs of initial vet care, food, and supplies while in foster care that currently average over $700 per dog).

Meeting Dogs | Foster dogs may have meet & greets by appointment to approved applicants only.  To become an approved applicant - please complete the application process.

Please know | Available dogs are updated as soon as possible and we do our best to keep it up-to-date, but occasionally dogs shown may become unavailable without notice due to a pending adoption.

We encourage you to put in an application even if you don't see your new family member currently, as once you are approved, we can place you on the waiting list for first priority on the selection of the dogs we do bring in. That means you can often meet a dog upon transport arrival and adopt before they even make it to this page!

We can not guarantee that a dog you wish to adopt is available by the time your adoption application is submitted, processed, and approved.  Your application is good for 90 days from the time of approval for any dog as long as it is a good fit for your family and your lifestyle.
