Onyx recently went on a Dog Day Out and here's what his DDO buddy had to say!
"Meet Onyx, an eight-year-old neutered male Pittie who is about 67 lbs. This adorable guy is all about affection - he lives for pets, hugs and head scritches. We spent a beautiful sunny Dog's Day Out with a long walk and chilling out in the backyard:
- He's a little hesitant about jumping up in the backseat - he's willing, just has a bit of trouble doing so gracefully. But once in, he's good to go; either lying down or watching out the window as you head on down the road.
- On the greenway, he's excellent walking on leash. We did two miles (pretty good for an older gentleman) and he was happy to walk along at a leisurely pace. He was very patient when we stopped to bird watch and/or do some wildflower identification. He showed only mild interest in other dogs, walkers or runners.
- At home, he enjoyed a doggie fro-yo on the patio and then explored the backyard before taking an afternoon nap in the sun. He frequently checks in with you for some affection, and he leans on ya while your loving him up. He knows sits (especially when there is a treat involved) and shake - we're certain he could learn even more commands. He also likes to play with a ball, mostly chasing and chewing them.
- He showed no interest in our cats (who were behind a glass door) and he never bothered us during our lunch. We topped off the day with a pup cup, which he slurped down in record time!
Despite Onyx being a senior dog, he still has lots of pep and personality - he would make a wonderful companion."
2nd DDO:
"In all honesty, if my house was slightly bigger Onyx would of just walked right into my house forever after our DDO.
Onyx is:
- an absolute love bug
- wonderful in the car
- perfection personified on leash
This guy wasn't phased by anything our day including: geese, ducks, 30+bikes at once, dogs, teenagers on zip lines, people, motorized scooters, and a bath.
This senior fella is anxiously waiting to meet his forever (or foster) home.
TLDR: onyx is perfect and you should adopt him"
Onyx really enjoys the company of people, so he will lean against you hard for pets meaning he could potentially knock over a toddler. He's never shown an ounce of aggression but older children who don't mind being a leaning post for our sweet boy would be best!
As always, we strongly recommend bringing any resident dogs to the shelter for a meet and greet with potential new family members to be sure it's a good match. If bringing a dog for a meet and greet, please bring proof of up to date rabies, bordetella, and DHPP vaccines.

The Guilford County Animal Shelter is the only public shelter in Guilford County. We are a professional, caring organization devoted to saving the lives of lost, abandoned and surrendered animals of Guilford County, N.C. We strive to humanely care for all the animals and work diligently to return lost animals to their owners.
We are committed to making every adoption of every animal a positive, permanent experience for both the animals and the pet owner. We work collaboratively with other rescue organizations to help place specific dogs, cats, livestock, exotic and wildlife.
