Hey dog lovers, meet Darla!
Darla is a quirky 8 year old senior gal who loves nothing more than to be cuddled and give kisses.
Darla was recently pulled by ELO rescue from the Brooklyn ACC after being found as a stray. During her time at the BACC, Darla was a staff favorite as she was known to always smother handlers with kisses and hugs,
In foster, Darla continues to be a very low energy girl, about a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10. Darla is extremely kid friendly and warms up easily to new people.
In her old age, Darla is a stubborn, dominant girl around other dogs and often pokes other dogs with her nose to initiatie play and if that doesnt work she will attempt to mount them to get her point across. Given Darla's behavior of expressing arousal, she would do well in a home with a laid back dog who isnt really bothered by Darla's need to be the boss and she will surely thrive in a only dog home. Darla is currently in foster with 3 other dogs, without incident.
Darla is also a vocal girl with a raspy howl. She is known to growl when she is enjoying pets or playtime but her growls should not be misunderstood with aggression - they are simply her way of communicating with her environment. Darla takes treats from the hand gently and respectfully, and LOVES to be handfed her kibble although she will eat from her bowl independently just fine.
Darla is fully housetrained, and can hold her bathroom breaks upward of 8 hours and always overnight. Darla loves bath and seemingly looks forward to all the body rubs she gets during bathtime!
Darla knows her sit, stay, lay and give paw command! It is evident that some time ago someone put in alot of work training this girly and making sure she was best friend material.
While at the BACC, Darla was diagnosised with hypothyroidism - which is completely managable by one pill a day which Darla eats with ease.
Due to her hypothyroidism, Darla has a missing patch of hair on her tail, some scarring on her forearm and overall a very thin layer of fur throughout her body. Darla also has some loose skin from thyroid induced weight gain which she loves to be rubbed! Darla can become cold easily due to thyroid indicued anemia and she can sometimes show some hind leg weakness, also attributed to her hypothyroidism. Despite her diagnosis, all of Darla's symptoms are easily manageable and Darla is expected to live a thorough and fruitful life.
Darla is her most excited when its time to go for a walk often grabbing the leash to walk herself but with quick redirection she has beautiful leash mannerisms. Darla does not show any signs of toy or food aggression and quickly settles after alerting the home to strangers at the door. Overall, underneath Darla's physical appearance she is a precious, freckle nose beauty who has so much love to give despite not being having the best life these last few years. If you have any doubts if Darla is the dog for you, come meet her in person and let her win your heart over, immediately.
