Mack is 1-1/2 - 2yo, weighs 40 lbs, is neutered is up to date on his vaccines, and is microchipped.   Mack's guardian adds:  "Mack has been a great dog.  He is well trained, super loving and loyal but needs a family that can give him the amount of attention he deserves.  He is very well behaved on and off leash.  He will 'come', 'sit', and 'stay'.  He has a 'place' in the house which he will sit at when commanded.  He is familiar with harnesses, compression collars, and remote collars.  This has been difficult to come to terms with because he is such a good dog.  We hope we are giving him a better opportunity to be the pet he is meant to be.  We have spent countless hours walking with him, working with him.  We have hired a trainer to work with him.  All with positive results, we just can't seem to get past his issues with the other dogs in our neighborhood.  We have a senior dog and his nature is to greet everyone and Mack simply has to stay away, which caused major issues on his walks.  He gets highly defensive and when cornered will lash out which has been very difficult for us to control.  Mack is in the home during the day; sleeps in his bed at night; dislikes/fears unfamiliar males, new environments, uncontrolled/unknown dogs approaching him; and is great during car rides."

Mack's guardian explains why she has made the difficult decision to rehome him:  "Unfortunately, when walked on leash he isn't tolerant of being approached by other dogs.  With our current living situation this hasn't been easy.  We have a small child and if our attention isn't solely on him we worry that it could lead to a very difficult situation."

Lunge/Attack Incident:  In January 2024, Mack fought with a neighbor's dog who entered Mack's yard; the incident didn't break the skin, medical attention was unwarranted, and animal control was not involved.  Mack's guardian explains:  "Our neighbor's dog, whom Mack has had issues with before, was off leash and entered our yard.  Mack barked and backed away but as the dog got closer Mack lashed at him and they fought.  No harm was done to either dog."

Mack's guardian states the following regarding children:  Although Mack lives with a 2yo child, his guardian doesn't recommend his living with children, stating "He's a little protective of his space in the house.  We sometimes worry about children that are unknown to him approaching quickly without our supervision.  But no real issues so far".

Mack's guardian states the following regarding dogs:  Mack lives with a dog, so his guardian recommends his living with dogs, stating "He has been great with our senior dog.  They met and bonded at the shelter.  They rough-house sometimes but always are controllable and listen to commands when instructed.  He just needs to be introduced in a calm easy manner, ideally off leash whilst the other dog is on leash".

Mack's guardian states the following regarding cats:  Mack hasn't lived with or otherwise been around cats, so his guardian doesn't recommend his living with cats since his reaction to them is unknown.

Mack's guardian describes him as:

Very active
Playful
Friendly
Likes to be touched
Affectionate
Protective
Always at your side
Nervous
House-Trained
Crate-Trained
Likes women & men (slower to accept males; mostly fearful of them; once they are known and familiar, he loves them)

Mack's guardian describes his ideal future home:  "Ideal home would be a young active family that wants a great dog to walk or run with, that doesn't mind not socializing on walks and that can give him individual attentioin.  High energy dog so ideally a home with a fenced-in yard for him to run."

Rehoming Fee:  None

More about this rescue

Rescue Well was founded by Christine Sandberg in Baltimore, Maryland in 2011. Since its launch, it’s grown from offering post-adoption support to the city shelter, to offering several programs across Maryland, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia. Our Programs focus on improving the lives of both pets and its owners. We proudly serve without judgment or expectations and we strictly follow our Rescue Well Engagement Model: ENGAGE > EDUCATE > EMPOWER.

Our organization’s programs are run by volunteers who are actively engaged in front-line intervention, community support, shelter support, and re-homing services for all pets.
