My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

BILLIE, F/S, DSH, BROWN/BLACK TABBY
BORN APRIL 07 2015

Billie is a shy but sweet cat who spent most of her life as a beloved outdoor kitty. She
showed up in a family's back yard as a young adult, and they have cared for her since.
Billie is a precocious kitty, and insisted on an outdoor life until the situation in her
neighbourhood changed. Now, she can no longer live safely outdoors, has accepted
indoor "retirement", and has been adjusting to the indoor life since November 2023.
Unfortunately, the family who has cared for her most her life cannot keep her as an indoor
pet due to medical issues, and they are seeking a new forever home for her where she
can spend her golden years as a spoiled indoor kitty.
Estimated to be approx. 9 years old, Billie is very healthy thanks to her loving foster family.
She was spayed as a young adult, has had parasite treatments consistently through her
adult life, and was always well fed and groomed by her human caregivers. Billie has
always been cooperative at the vet and while being groomed, and has never reacted
aggressively, instead choosing to pretend to be invisible when stressed. She tolerates
trusted humans picking her up and placing her in the carrier, with reassurance that she will
be safe. She has adjusted well to indoor life, learning to use the scratching post as a
substitute for trees, and the litter box instead of the garden. She likes to keep her space
clean and tidy, and is glad when her humans help her by sweeping around the litterbox
and putting things in order.

A typical busy day in Billie's life includes long naps in sunny windows or other cozy places,
enjoying her meals and sampling new treats (including house plants within reach),
spending time with her favourite humans, and participating in feline enrichment activities
and hunting games. She has discovered the joys of teaser toys and squeaky mouse toys
as a substitute for hunting outdoors, and interactive food puzzles/treats hidden around her
space. She loves chasing balls and will play soccer with you! She does not care much for
catnip or laser pointers, and would prefer instead to sit with her favourite human and chat
while getting brushed or massaged. She enjoys music and will flick her tail with the music.
Once you gain Billie's trust, you have a friend and companion for life. She is wary of new
humans, but will approach familiar people and those she has a friendship with (even if they
are not part of her household). She is very attuned to her humans, and would love to
spend time with someone who will talk to her, sit and cuddle with her, and otherwise let her
be involved in their day to day life. She loves following her humans around the house,
watching them cook or garden, and watch TV with them from her favourite perch. She is
very clever and picks up on human actions and intentions quickly, especially when humans
talk to her and explain what's going on.

Billie would do best in a quiet home without small children, as she is scared of loud and/or
sudden noises, and people who approach her too quickly. When startled, she will retreat to
a quiet space, and will return when the environment is calmer. She would be glad for a
laid-back and friendly animal companion for her golden years. However, she could not
tolerate a companion who is aggressive or domineering, as it would stress her-she would
begin to pull out her fur. As a former outdoor cat, she is very prey-driven, thus would not
be successful in a home with birds or small animals. Her new family should also have
measures in place to ensure she can't escape outdoors, especially in pursuit of birds or
other critters outside the window.

If you think your home could be a good fit for Billie in her golden years, please submit an
adoption application, and we will reach out to you to discuss next steps.

More about this rescue

Our main purpose is to save the lives of cats in danger of death, starvation and disease and to educate the public about cats in their homes and neighbourhoods. Some of our rescues are hand-picked from overcrowded local shelters. Others have been rescued from known “dump” sites. Still others may be trapped from lives outside by kind volunteers or families or may be surrendered by families who can no longer care for them for various reasons.
