My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Monty is a handsome senior male tuxedo cat with short, sleek fur and beautiful green eyes. He’s a warm, gentle companion who enjoys attention on his own terms—sometimes crawling onto your lap to relax, and other times looking up and gently placing his paws on you to ask to be held or carried around the house. Monty loves butt pats and chin scritches.

Don’t be fooled by Monty’s senior status—he still enjoys daily playtime. He absolutely loves it when someone drags and flicks his favorite string toy so he can hunt, pounce, and leap into the air. He also loves the laser pointer. Daily play keeps him happy, active, and engaged.

Monty is a dedicated eater and thrives on Fancy Feast grilled or flaked food (he isn’t interested in dry food). Introducing new foods can upset his stomach, so he does best with consistency. He will let you know when it’s time to eat—from soulful morning stares to his backup communication method of licking nearby plastic if staring doesn’t do the trick.

Some of his adorable habits include sleeping with his face planted on the couch, hiding behind curtains and gently lunging at your ankles (no claws or teeth—just playful ambushes!), and curling up beside you at night. His favorite spots are the window hammock for bird and squirrel watching and his self-warming cat pad. At bedtime, he will come to sleep near you or at the foot of the bed.

Monty takes excellent care of himself—daily self-baths and scratching posts help him stay well groomed and trim. Multiple scratching posts in the home make him especially happy.

Monty is friendly with new people and does well with calm kids who give him space and aren’t too loud. He has lived with a dog before and did fine. Monty is not good with other cats and would do best as the only cat in his forever home. He also prefers not to be picked up or cuddled constantly. He’s affectionate in just the right ways, on his own schedule.

Monty is a wonderful companion and would love a relaxed, loving home where he can be spoiled, played with daily, and given plenty of tasty meals.

He was born in August 2014, is neutered, vaccinated, tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia, and is looking for a new home.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

At the adoption fairs, if you meet a kitten or cat that you want to adopt, you will be asked to complete an application and contract and leave a check for the adoption fee ($120 for an adult or $145 for un-neutered kitten of which $50 is a deposit that is refunded after you provide 4Paws proof of sterilization). We ask that you pay the adoption fee up front at the fairs in order to “put a hold” on the cat until your application is processed. If your application is not approved, your check is returned to you.

Neither cats nor kittens are sent to their new homes on the day of the fair. It usually takes 4-5 days to process the application before the cat can go to his or her adoptive home. Pre-approval is an option, though. To accelerate the adoption process, you can fax a completed application and contract to us at 703-560-9795 a few days before the fair. Adoption Applications are available on this website.

Go meet their pets

Adoption fairs are held once or twice a month at various PETCO stores in Northern Virginia. The adoption fairs are usually held on Saturday’s from 1:00 to 5:00. Between 30 and 60 cats and kittens are shown for adoption at each fair—with the larger fairs generally occurring April through October.

While they are waiting to find permanent loving homes, our cats temporarily live in foster homes. The foster families bring the cats and kittens to the adoption fairs to be seen by potential adopters. Applicants have the opportunity to handle the cats and in some cases, meet the foster parents who can provide additional insight into a cat’s habits and personality.
