My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

RALPH - 1 years, 22lbs, Beagle/Terrier Mix, Neutered

Please read everything below and submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org if this pup seems like a good fit for your family. :)

Thier Foster Parent Says: "Ralph is such a sweet cuddle bug and it’s clear he just wants to be loved. Took him a day to get used to his foster home but adjusted well by the second day. He enjoys walks around Williamsburg, playing tag with his foster cat brother, and curling up watching TV with his foster Mom. He doesn’t mind being carried if you need to scoop him up. He’s sometimes interested in playing fetch with toys inside but really just wants to chew on the toy. As a beagle, he’s always hungry and eats like he hasn’t eaten in days. He calmly sleeps curled up next to his foster Mom every night. He’s very well behaved in public. He went to brunch with his foster mom and her friends on his second day and was so good inside, just moving from person to person getting cuddles. On his third day, he enjoyed sitting outside at a restaurant just enjoying the people watching. Overall, he’s been a fairly easy foster and everyone who has met him loves him."

Level of dog ownership experience needed:
BEGINNER: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup.

Energy level

MEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)

Cuddle Bug Level
High — Wants to be in your lap pretty much all the time

Potty Trained
Yes — Few or no accidents - might have a transitional accident

Comfy with strangers?
Yep — Wants to be friends with everyone who walks by, super social butterfly, loves anyone who will stop to say hello.

Good with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision)
Yes for 8 and up — may be a little energetic or a little skittish, best with older children that can be extra gentle or that are big enough not to get accidentally knocked down

Good with Other Dogs?
Yes — Good with all other dogs (sizes, breeds, etc.) as far as we know and enjoys socializing with other canines

Good with Other Animals? (cats, small pets, etc.)
Yes —  Currently in a foster home with a cat. But he does play with the cat (grumpy old cats would not be a good fit). When we walk, sometimes he wants to chase the squirrels/birds, sometimes he’s uninterested. I also have a cat who he gets along with although they’ve increasingly gotten rougher over the past few days. My cat is fine – engages and seems to like the chase – but just highlighting since that may not work for all cats. But overall he gets along with most animals :)

Mouthy Behavior?
Medium – Is respectful of hands, feet, etc. but does like to chew on things it’s not supposed to like shoes, furniture, etc. He wasn’t so much the first few days but as he’s gotten more comfortable, he’s definitely started chewing on shoes, toys, towels, etc.

Leash Manners?
Learning This Skill – But I want to add it is very manageable. As a beagle, he leads with his nose so he’s a bit all over the place when we walk. But still fairly easy to walk him.

Okay in the city?
Yes — Seems unfazed by the sights and sounds, they may as well have been born here.
Overall he’s fine walking on the Brooklyn sidewalks. He does seem a little timid/spooked at times although doesn’t seem to be anything particular.

Jumping on People to Say Hi?
Medium – Jumps up only on people the dog knows when really excited. Stops with correction.

Separation Anxiety?
Lower – Might cry for a few minutes when you first leave the house but settles pretty quickly and has no problem being left alone.

Crate training?
Not at all – Don’t even have one, I’ve puppy proofed and we free range.

Medical status
Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake

How this dog ended up with Social Tees:
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.
