My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello everyone,
My name is Russell Pembroke. Russell is what my buddies who rescued me wanted to call me, then my foster mom saw the street sign I was hunkered down next to "Pembroke" Rd. I answer all names including my nickname, Russ.
I am the sweetest, cutest, lovingest Staffordshire Terrier you have ever met. When I was in the crate or dog run, my foster mom put her fingers through the wire to me. I gave her the googly eyes with my tail wagging a hundred times a second as I gently nibbled on her finger tips. Everyone who has met me cannot believe how sweet I am.
I was found on Easter Eve hunkered down in some underbrush on the corner of Pembroke and a country rural street (dirt road). When my foster dad first saw me my head was down as low as possible. He thought I was protecting where I lived or something. He came back with my foster mom. She got out of the truck with a bag of food. The minute she shook the bag, my head popped up. It took me a whole second to get out of the brush, through the ditch to where she was standing. She was absolutely heartbroken, for I was terribly skinny, covered in ticks, and a huge hole in my front leg (she could see the tendon and bone).
How I got there and who owned me will be a mystery not explored. All I know is I am safe (in boarding to keep an eye on my leg healing), I have been neutered and leg sewn. There is a house cat running the boarding facility (we have met nose to nose), a couple of older children, and nice adults. I am dog social with proper introductions and patience. I am not food aggressive towards humans, but I have not eaten out of the crate with other dogs around.
I am ready to come home. Please fill out an application and start my journey home to you. I promise I will be the best Nanny dog you have ever had.

We are very careful with our adoptions for these orphans are in our homes. They are family to us. If it does not feel right, there is probably a reason. The adoption is cancelled.

Go meet their pets

The ladies with FOHA, RI (Sandra Lamb) have invited our orphans to participate in adoption events.

More about this rescue

My name is Carla Carlton. We (my husband and I) are retired militay. He served in the Air Force for 25 years. We have always done some sort of servicing the community. So, when we got ready to retire, we found a place we wanted to live and bought a home. Well, the town we lived in has/had a high kill shelter. This broke our hearts.
Around this same time, I met a lady who fostered for Friends of Homeless Animals, RI. One day I got a call from FOHA there was a poodle in our shelter and he was on the short list. I went and pulled him. Roie (FOHA), helped set me up to foster and list our orphans from here as a courtesy post. I am not sure how long ago it was, 16-18 years, I think. The rest is history. Through them and Mountain Pet Rescue, CO (and a few others in CO, UT, IA, IL, OR, CA, MS...), we have placed over 2400 dogs/ puppies and cats.
