Background: Oreo Jones was brought to our shelter by police officers after being found loose at Captain Rivera Playground. Upon arrival, he displayed signs of shyness and fear, indicative of a potentially challenging past.
Behavior Assessment: During his assessment on April 17, 2024, Oreo Jones demonstrated mild strength and pulling while on a leash. He showed no reactivity to humans or other dogs but appeared aloof with both the handler and other stimuli. Despite his initial shyness, he readily approached when called over and displayed a social demeanor by jumping up on the handler.
Interactions: Oreo Jones's interactions with toys and other dogs indicate some potential challenges. While he displayed interest in gripping toys firmly, he moved away with a tense body when approached. Additionally, his reaction to other dogs at the gate suggests a level of tension and arousal.
Energy Level and Recommendations: Given his unknown history, Oreo Jones's energy level and behavior in a home environment remain uncertain. However, we recommend activities such as long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to regular exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
Behavior Determination: Oreo Jones has been assessed as a Level 4 dog. Due to his poor basic manners, low threshold for arousal, and potential for defensive aggression, we recommend an adult-only home at this time.
Potential Challenges: Oreo Jones may exhibit challenges related to resource guarding, basic manners, fearful/defensive behavior, leash-biting, and low threshold for arousal. Patience, positive reinforcement, and force-free training techniques will be essential in addressing these challenges.
Despite his complexities, Oreo Jones has the potential to become a loving and loyal companion in the right environment. With patience, understanding, and proper training, he can overcome his past and thrive in a supportive home. If you're prepared to provide Oreo Jones with the care and guidance he needs, he could be the perfect addition to your family.
A volunteer writes: As described in the notes from his interactions with staff here at the shelter, Oreo Jones' life before coming to us is a bit of a mystery. What we do know is that this handsome dog has been very brave throughout the many recent transitions he has experienced, and he's been doing his best to show us what a good boy he is! A bit shy and reserved, Oreo would benefit from a home and person(s) who can give him the time and space he needs to open up at his own pace, in a calm supportive environment where he can feel safe. In return, this beautiful boy will be your loyal companion and the softest snuggler. Primary Color: Black Secondary Color: White Weight: 67 Age: 2yrs 1mths 1wks
