My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Parakeets, or `budgies,` are small, intelligent birds that can make a great companion pet. A large bird cage is important to keep parakeets safe and allow them ample space to stretch their wings and fly. Supervised out of cage time in a secure indoor area is also important for parakeets so they can have exercise and mental stimulation. Parakeets can live alone or with a companion, as long as they have plenty of interaction with their human friends if they don`t have a bird buddy. Toys, mirrors, and plenty of perches are important for parakeets so they have many activities in their space. Parakeets are lower maintenance than most larger bird species, but still require specialized care and gentle handling. They can be great pets for older kids, teens, and adults. Most parakeets live to be 5-8 years of age with proper care.

More about this shelter

We are an open admissions shelter, meaning we take in homeless animals regardless of age, breed, health, temperament or lack of space. On average, we take in about 5,500 stray, surrendered and abandoned animals per year including dogs, cats, small mammals, birds and reptiles. We provide adoption services to find safe, happy homes for these pets; and also provide low-cost vaccination and microchip clinics to help safeguard them against illness or being lost forever.
