My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, I'm Smokey, the gentle giant with a heart as big as my paws! I may look imposing with my mastiff mix stature, but deep down, I'm just a big softie who loves nothing more than snuggles and belly rubs. However, I do have a tendency to get spooked easily, so I would feel most comfortable in a home with older children, preferably over 16, who can understand and respect my boundaries. When it comes to medical handling, I'll be honest - I'm still working on gaining confidence. The vet can be a scary place for me, but with the right guidance and patience from an experienced owner, I know I can learn to feel more comfortable and secure during those visits. So, someone who understands my needs and can gently ease me into these situations would be ideal. So, if you're looking for a gentle giant to join your family and fill your home with love and joy, then look no further than yours truly, Smokey! Come meet me at KHS, and let's see if we're destined to be lifelong pals!

Smokey will do best in a home with:

Entry to the shelter is currently limited, and walk-ins are not permitted for general pet viewing. Masks are currently optional.

View our Available Pets page and select a few that you would like to meet. Then download an Adoption Application and fill it out prior to visiting our shelter. Our adoption process is a walk-up and queue-based, first-come, first-served system. You will have a meet and greet with an Adoption Counselor to discuss your application, review information on the pets you would like to meet, and you will be introduced to the pet(s).If the Meet and Greet is a success, staff will complete your adoption paperwork to make it official! If your new family member is already spayed/neutered, they will go home with you right away!

More about this shelter

Kitsap Humane Society is a private, nonprofit animal shelter. We rescue and rehome over 6000 pets each year. Every dog or cat leaves our shelter spayed or neutered and with complete vaccines and a microchip. We have been caring for animals in need since 1908 and envision a time when all adoptable pets have loving homes.

We are extremely proud of our exceptionally high “lives saved” rate of over 96%. Through our active adoption, behavior, foster, transfer, and veterinary programs, we are able to rehome every adoptable animal that enters our facility. No animal is ever euthanized for lack of space.

In addition to caring for and adopting animals, we also provide spay/neuter services to low income residents of Kitsap County, and provide Animal Rescue and Enforcement services to our surrounding municipalities.
