My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DISCLOSURE: The adoptable pets in our program are still in the care and custody of owners who wish to re-home their pet. Owners have enlisted Rescue Well to provide marketing and screening of applicants as a service, free of charge. All fees and adoption conditions are determined by the owner. We advise that adopters do not send payment or deposits for pets prior to adopting.

Pepper is 5yo, weighs 50lbs, is spayed, is up to date on her vaccines, and is microchipped.  Pepper "knows basic commands (sit, stay, leave it, come, down).  We use an electronic collar solely for the beeping function as a que for her to come inside or be at attention.  She roams the house freely or is kept in her crate for short periods of time as needed.  She sleeps on a dog bed in the master bedroom or in her crate.  She loves the car, loves watching out the windows, and sniffing everything."

Pepper's guardian explains why she has made the difficult decision to rehome her:

"We have a toddler and are expecting the second.  We saw an uptick of aggressive behavior from Pepper towards our cats starting during my first pregnancy and now we are seeing the behavior escalate further.  We believe that this behavior is jealousy-based as my attention becomes more stretched as we add more members to our family.  Her aggression has never been directed at a member of our family or any other person.  We've tried interventions such as medication (she takes Prozac daily) and training but with another child on the way we aren't able to provide the time, resources, and attention that Pepper needs anymore."

Bite Incident:  In July 2020, in Nottingham, MD, Pepper bit another dog outside her yard; the bite broke the skin/scratched the cornea; animal control was not involved; treatment was required to the eye.  Pepper's guardian further explains:

"Pepper escaped from our yard, with me following closely after her.  When I reached her she has approached a smaller dog who was walking with its owner. The smaller dog nipped at Pepper's paws and Pepper responded by barking and biting the other dog.  The other dog had a scratched cornea that required vet attention."

Pepper's guardian offers a brief a medical history:  "Currently on Prozac for anxiety.  She is a very anxious dog."

Pepper's guardian states the following regarding children:  Pepper lives with children, ages 0-2, so her guardian recommends her living with children, stating...

"Pepper is great with kids.  She generally ignores children unless they engage with her but happily engaged with them once the invitation is extended.  Our toddler loves and gets along with her very well and she is extremely tolerant of his not-so-gentle nature.  She has stayed with families with older school-age children and they have also gotten along very well with her and she's played very happily with them."

Pepper's guardian states the following regarding dogs:  Although Pepper doesn't live with a dog, her guardian recommends her living with dogs, stating "She is best with calm, passive dogs.  She does not do well with other high-energy dogs".

Pepper's guardian states the following regarding cats:  Although Pepper lives with cats, her guardian doesn't recommend her living with cats, stating...

"She has lived with cats since we got her when she was 6 months old.  She has a strong chase instinct and prey drive and that's never fully calmed down with our cats.  This is exacerbated as her anxiety worsens."

Pepper's guardian describes her as:

Very active
Barks alot
Playful
Likes to be touched
Affectionate
Fearful
Protective
Always at your side
Indoor dog
Outdoor dog
Nervous
House-Trained
Crate-Trained
Likes men
Likes women
Separation anxiety

Pepper's guardian describes her ideal future home:

"Pepper would do best in a fully fenced yard, but she does currently do well in a yard that is not fully fenced in.  An ideal home for her would be an active home that could provide her with regular walks or even hikes/swims, or a house with school age kids."

Rehoming Fee: None

More about this rescue

Rescue Well was founded by Christine Sandberg in Baltimore, Maryland in 2011. Since its launch, it’s grown from offering post-adoption support to the city shelter, to offering several programs across Maryland, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia. Our Programs focus on improving the lives of both pets and its owners. We proudly serve without judgment or expectations and we strictly follow our Rescue Well Engagement Model: ENGAGE > EDUCATE > EMPOWER.

Our organization’s programs are run by volunteers who are actively engaged in front-line intervention, community support, shelter support, and re-homing services for all pets.
