My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, I’m Layla. I spent a little while on the streets, where people were not always kind to me.   I just want to be loved, but I gues they were afraid of me, so I am trying to trust again.  My foster mom is awesome and so patient with me.  I have 2 brothers and being with boys makes me feel calm and more confident.  Mom always loves on them, so she must not be too bad right?   I  I’m still not sure about what’s going to happen when someone walks by me, so most of the time I head in the other direction. I am feeling a little more secure every day and there have even been a few times I let my foster mom come up to me and pet me. Now, if mom has cheese, I will take that right out of her hand! I love cheese!  Mom says I am a very gentle eater, and I don’t think it will be long before I’ll be secure enough to take all the treats from her hand!  I am working hard on being a loved family pet, because I could definetly get used to this!

Layla is suprisingly house broken - no accidents at all.  Though I do have a doggie door, so often Layla uses this as an escape route if she is unsure of what is going on in the house.  Layla is also crate trained, but will exhibit some anxiety if she is crated in a room by herself, which I easily solved by putting all the crates together in one room when I leave the house.  Layla is definelty more confident and secure with other dogs around, so she will need at least one other dog in the home. She is also an excellent car rider, and enjoys going on errands with me and the boys. Layla is a sweet and beautiful girl, and with time and patience will be a loyal and loving family member.

Go meet their pets

GHGSDR holds Meet and Greets @ several Petco stores in the Houston area each month, usually from 1pm to 4pm. Check our homepage for locations and dates.

On our homepage we list the names of the dogs that are expected to be at the event - check 1 or 2 days before the event.

We hope that you will come on out and meet some of our wonderful GSDs. Meet our volunteers and learn more about why GSDs are a wonderful breed!
See you there!

More about this rescue

GHGSDR volunteers are dedicated to saving as many German Shepherds in the Greater Houston Metro area as humanly possible - based on current resources of available foster homes, the rate at which we can find suitably matched adoptive homes, and of course, financial resources for veterinary care.

GHGSDR Shepherds mostly come from animal shelters where they are awaiting euthanasia. All of these Shepherd Dogs need loving, forever homes and families to call their own. We have several GSDs available for adoption and we regularly take in more Shepherds under our wings and into our Rescue Program, increasing the numbers of dogs available for adoption. Whenever we can, we also work with other dog rescue groups in Texas and nationwide to help ensure the safety and security of these wonderful animals.
