My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

41 lbs, 4 years, Shepherd mix, Neutered male

NEEDS HOME OUTSIDE OF THE CITY. Can NOT be adopted in the city. Suburbs and beyond only for this boy!

Is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org.

Thier Foster Parents Say:" Nougat- the dog that will melt your heart with one look. This gentle soul with energetic streaks  has so many personalities. On one hand he is high energy and curious and needs exercise and mental stimulation multiple times daily, especially if you are leaving the home frequently. On the other hand he is very content lounging with you on the couch. He could sit outside in the yard sunbathing til his heart's content. He loves to play with other dogs chasing balls or just each other! He gets attached and doesn’t love being alone. New environments might scare him but once he gets used to his safe space, he’ll do just fine! Nougat is an excellent student if you have the patience to teach him with treats. He learned sit/down in 20 min! He responds well to positivity but gets frightened by stern voices (use sparingly). A true food connoisseur. He Loves making sure counters are completely clean. Counter surfer is listed as his profession on LinkedIn, so be watchful but use his food motivation to your advantage in training. You’ll hear grunts when he’s getting comfy, barks when he wants to play with another dog, and howling when sirens or firetrucks go by. All in all this 2 year old German Shepherd mix is the perfect addition to any human-whether you are looking for a solo dog or already have one or two, he fits in well and will be the perfect adventure companion."

Level of dog ownership experience needed:
INTERMEDIATE: This dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.)

Energy level
MEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)

Cuddle bug level:

High! - Loves to go in for a good snuggle

Potty trained?

Yes - no accidents

Comfy with strangers?

Yes - loves to meet new people

Comfortable with children? (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)

Yes - okay with respectful children

Social with other dogs?

Yes- He is super good with other dogs!!! Currently living with two dogs: one younger and one a senior. Knows how to navigate both dynamics well. Loves to play with other dogs.

Mouthy behavior:

Respectful with his mouth - but will counter surf so be sure to tidy up!

Leash manners:

Pretty good on leash - has pretty decent leash manners

Okay in the city?

NO - Nougat must be adopted out of the city. Needs a home in the burbs or beyond.

Jumping to say hi?

Low - is pretty good at keeping all four on the floor.

Separation anxiety?

Might cry  - Nougat might cry at first but then will settle down. He seems to exhibit transitional separation anxiety: this means that he will cry more when he goes to a new home but then will settle into place

Crate trained?

Nope - does not use a crate

Medical status
Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake

How this dog ended up with Social Tees:
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.
