Despite the fact that someone tried to make him look scary by chopping off his ears and tail, Arnie is such a nice dog. He may actually be the nicest dog we have ever fostered. He’s an easy and laid back guy that will be a great fit in an equally laid back environment.

He’s fully house trained and has not had one single accident in our home. He is not destructive and has never gotten in to anything that isn’t his. He has no problem spending the entire day crated while you’re at work - he actually LOVES his crate and spends time in it without being asked - and when you’re home he’s happy to hang out on the couch with his favorite toy. His energy level is on the lower side and while he might chase a ball in the yard once or twice, he’d rather not.

Arnie is a little sensitive - he sometimes will pancake or cower when you give him a “nuh uh.” He doesn’t want to disappoint you, and feels super bad when he thinks he has. Loud noises just aren’t his jam, and he doesn’t even make them himself - I have yet to hear him bark, even once. But if you sing to him, or say his name playfully, he’ll give you a big smile and sit on your feet to show you that he loves you.

Arnie is an aggressive cuddler. He’s 80+ pounds and isn’t satisfied simply being near you. He needs to be ON you. He prefers to stand on top of you with his favorite toy in his mouth, trying to shove it into your mouth so you can chew on it too. You have to physically push him off of you, which is no easy task given his size and strength while you are sitting down with him on top of you. He also loves to trust fall onto your lap (as pictured) which is equally adorable and gut-punching. For this reason, we will not place him in a home with little kids.

He’s great on leash and generally easy to walk, but will throw hard stares in the direction of some dogs. He doesn’t react, and a “leave it” or even just saying his name in your best sing-songy voice will get his attention back to you and he might even give you a happy spin. He shows some interest in small wildlife, but the same technique works there too. We do still recommend a physically strong handler given his size, weight and low center of gravity - in the rare instance that he wants to pull, he can really pull.

Arnie currently lives with two chill large male dogs - though both are a little smaller than him - and has had no problem adjusting to their space and play styles.

We absolutely love Arnie and know that he will bring so much joy to whoever adopts him. They will be VERY lucky to have such a loving, well-mannered dog.

Arnie is currently being fostered in Brookfield, IL. No out of state applicants, please.
