My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Baby Cakes loves to run and make new friends! He is also a great learner and we worked on 'sit' which he began getting the hang of! He is reactive of other dogs and small children on the street and will pull on his leash.
Background: Baby Cakes, a 2-year-old large mixed breed male, entered the MACC system on April 29th as a stray with no known history.
Spay/Neuter Status: Baby Cakes has not been spayed or neutered.
Behavior Assessment: Upon intake, Baby Cakes displayed a friendly and relaxed demeanor, eagerly approaching staff with a wiggly body and showing affection by licking. Despite initial vocalization, he responded well to calming cues such as classical music and shushing sounds. During his assessment on May 2nd, he exhibited moderate pulling on leash walks and showed immense interest in sniffing his surroundings. Baby Cakes displayed no reactivity to humans or dogs and readily approached handlers when called.
Interactions: In the kennel room, Baby Cakes maintained a loose and social disposition, readily approaching handlers and displaying acceptance of soft handling. However, he exhibited fearfulness with exuberant handling, displaying head whips when contact was made with his legs. He demonstrated exuberant behavior during jog exercises, including jumping up and biting the leash.
Energy Level and Recommendations: While lacking a history in a home environment, Baby Cakes is described as a young, enthusiastic, and social dog. To keep him engaged and fulfilled, daily mental and physical stimulation will be essential. Long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and interactive games are recommended alongside regular exercise to channel his energy positively.
Behavior Determination: Baby Cakes has been assessed as a Level 2 dog. Due to his lack of basic manners and impulse control, it's recommended that he be placed in a home without young children under 5 years old. Training should focus on reinforcing default behaviors like "Sit" and "Off" to manage his impulses and prevent frustration. Force-free, reward-based training is advised.
Dog-Dog Interaction: No reactivity to dogs was observed during assessments, indicating potential compatibility with other dogs pending proper introductions and ongoing socialization.
Potential Challenges: Baby Cakes may present challenges related to basic manners and leash biting. Training should focus on redirecting his behavior positively and teaching him to focus on handlers rather than the leash. Force-free training methods and proper management are recommended to address these challenges effectively.
Despite his challenges, Baby Cakes' friendly demeanor and social nature make him a promising candidate for a loving home willing to invest in his training and enrichment. With patience, consistent training, and plenty of love, Baby Cakes has the potential to become a cherished companion and loyal family member. Primary Color: Brindle Weight: 63.6 Age: 2yrs 0mths 3wks
