My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, I'm Serafeena. I am a four paw declawed 5 year old lady and looking for a forever family, a real one, as I've been let down so many times in my short life. I was surrendered to animal control by my "family" through no fault of my own and then have been adopted and returned TWICE to St. Sophia's. I don't understand why and neither does my foster mom. Sure I am a bit shy when I first meet you, but once I get comfortable with you I am the sweetest most laid back girl. I'm pretty much a lump, I move around my foster home from sleep spot to sleep spot and love to sit on my foster mom's lap and binge tv. I am extremely easy going and get along fine with other cats, we don't snuggle or anything but I cohabitate with everyone happily, even the chill chihuahua in my foster home is good in my book. Oh and kids are good in my book too as long as they aren't too wild, I like a lowkey life! Same with the animals, I dont mind other cats or even easy going dogs but I plan to cohabitate, not cuddle or play. My ideal home would be a quiet, mellow household by myself or with just a couple other laid back other pets who wont get in my face.

Now for the important thing, I don't handle transition well. Once I am settled, I am a gem of a cat and any family would be lucky to have me. My most recent family returned me back to St. Sophia's not because they didn't care for me, but because I stopped eating when I first went to their house. When a cat stops eating even for a few days it is serious business and they delayed taking me into a vet. I went into a condition called hepatic lipidosis, basically my liver stopped working because of my anorexia and when they did take me in to the vet, the vet told them it would take a temporary feeding tube to save my life since I had gotten so bad and so they returned me back to St. Sophia's rather than care for me. I had a feeding tube in to get me healthy again and I began to eat on my own again but I am a picky eater. I predominately eat homemade cat food (easily meal prepped once every few weeks using boneless, skinless chicken breast and something called EZComplete to make sure it has all the nutrients I need to stay healthy) or sometimes I like Mitten's Morsels wet cat food, specifically in the beef flavor and I nibble at dry food to snack but not enough to actually sustain myself. Now I am all better and looking for a FOREVER home. My new family will have to keep a close eye on me initially to make sure I am eating to keep me from getting sick again but if you put in time, you will be rewarded with possibly the most kind, gentle, and loving cat to ever exist. I promise I am worth it.

More about this shelter

OUR PURPOSE:
St. Sophia’s Forgotten Felines is a non-profit foster-based cat rescue in Wheaton, IL. Established in late 2010, St. Sophia’s strives to be the best in temporary care for cats in transition. What does this mean? It means that the cats in our care aren’t intended to stay in our care. Our hope is a forever home for every adoptable cat — no more homeless cats!

OUR CATS:
The cats we care for at St. Sophia's come from many different places. The majority of the cats we help are those that are helpless, who have not experienced love or a home, stray, abused, and neglected cats. Primarily we work with high-volume/high-kill animal controls to save cats from needless euthanasia. Our largest partner is Chicago Animal Care and Control. Other ACs we partner with are Aurora, Joliet Township, DuPage, Herrin, Marion, Quincy, Tilton, Union, Jasper, and Whiting.

St. Sophia's also works with local Trap-Neuter-Return organizations. Trap-Neuter-Return (also known as TNR) is a method of humanely trapping unaltered feral cats, neutering them, and releasing them back to the same environment where they were originally found. TNR is promoted by proponents as a humane and more effective alternative for managing and reducing feral cat populations (compared to euthanasia). While most cats trapped are completely feral (wild, without any domestic socialization), some cats—often kittens, or even adults that have been well cared-for outdoors—can, and have, become socialized and adoptable. TNR organizations aren't equipped to handle the "friendlies" that come in, so we step in to assist those cats looking for homes.

Lastly, some of our cats are direct owner surrenders. Sometimes circumstances have it that people are unable to care for their cats due to moving, eviction, financial issues, death, allergies, etc. We accept these cats in when we have space and maintain a waiting list of those who need assistance. If you ever find yourself in this type of position, please read our surrender policies to see how we can help.

Once a cat is in our care, St. Sophia evaluates each cat individually in order to determine what the best forever home would be. We use the ASPCA Felinality Behavioral Assessment Tool to learn about each cat's needs and personalities. Our cats are raised in foster homes and get individualized attention to help them reach their full potential and get ready for their forever homes. Each cat is different in many ways, and St. Sophia’s prides itself on being able to determine what’s best for each cat on a one-on-one basis.
