Hi there, my name is Dirk. My name has a Dutch origin and means ‘the people's ruler' but I only want to rule your heart. I lived with a wonderful person for most of my life and I was super happy. Unfortunately, my human got sick and could no longer take care of me so I came back to WCHS. Yes, I was adopted as a youngster way back in 2019. In my previous home I was confined to a room when I was alone so I did not have to manage the whole house by myself. When I was a pup, I was comfortable in a crate but have not needed to use one for over 4 years. At night I had the luxury of sleeping in my person's bed and that was grand because we could snuggle all night long. I am an affectionate lad, but at 88 pounds I may be a touch too big for your lap. I know proper potty behavior and learned to whine and run to the door to indicate I needed to use the outside facilities. When I come to my new home it would be wise to give me plenty of opportunities to go outside until we learn each other's signals and routines. I had a fenced yard to play in and that was lovely because I am an active guy who likes to play. I am friendly and intelligent and already know the cues for ‘sit', ‘down' and ‘come'. I must confess that I tend to pull a bit on a leash because I get excited and joyful about exploring all the wonders of nature. I am quite strong so I suppose I should practice walking more politely on a leash. I enjoy car rides and am happy to be your sidekick on any adventure. I love to be with my people and get a smidge anxious when I am separated from them. Here's a fun fact about me - I lived with a macaw for a while and did OK. I am hoping for an active family who is looking for a big hunk of love to share their life. Stop by to meet me in person and I think you will be smitten with my charm.

Additional adoption info

Visit the shelter. We have an application that takes about 15 minutes to fill out once you have found a pet you like. You call back the next day which gives us time to review the application and gives you 24 hours to think about your decision to adopt. You can also complete our on-line application and get approved in advance of finding the perfect companion. Once approved, you are able to adopt an animal the same day.
