My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

HENRY! Loved by all and truly a shelter favorite. This huge gentle giant is the heart of Milo. He has so many supporters that his adoption fee has been sponsored - shout out Thomas and Mila! This big baby was left abandoned in Willits when his homeless human was taken to jail... he was found hungry and bottoming out, left alone without his loyal companion. Thankfully, a good Samaritan picked him up and brought him to us to be part of the Milo family. Henry has been the star resident of Milo since May of 2024. He was just a baby when he came to us; 10 months old. The one true person he trusted and loved was taken from him and he had to learn how to trust a number of caretakers. But that was easy for him, giving love is where Henry thrives!

Henry is an active, athletic, and playful pup who has been getting plenty of hikes, walks and playtime with his wonderful foster parents. He's perfectly potty trained and signals when he needs to go out. He loves to play, not only with people, but his dog buddies as well. He's come a long way with his play and is now respectful of other dogs' corrections, backing off if he oversteps or becomes too much for the other dog. After lots of training, he walks beautifully on leash (unless he sees a squirrel, hence the "strong handler" requirement!) and isn't bothered when passing by other dogs, even if they yap and bark at him.

In the home or at his foster mom's workplace, he knows to settle down and has fallen into a great routine of settling inside, with plenty of opportunities for walking throughout the day. He's wary of visitors though (both in the home and the workplace) and will bark to let them know he's not comfortable, so he would do best in a quiet home or office setting where he knows the people well. He's always ready to cuddle up and receive loving pets while offer sloppy kisses in return. Eager to please and food motivated, Henry is quick to learn and thrives on affection, he enjoys learning new things and is always up for a training session. He picks up on things quickly and works through the cognitive challenges presented to him. When he gets frustrated and doesn't understand what is being asked of him, he will bark to let you know. His connection and communication with a human handler is impressive and makes training him a fun and rewarding experience.

Henry is the perfect companion for anyone looking for a fun, loving, and energetic addition to their home. He will need guidance on the expectations of his new home, but he's shown he's very adaptable and will do his very best to be the BEST boy you're looking for. If you're ready for a silly, affectionate dog who will shower you with love, Henry is waiting for you!

More about this rescue

The Milo Foundation is an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill organization providing an alternative for homeless pets throughout California, through education, adoption services, and providing sanctuary for animals until permanent homes can be found.

Founded in August of 1994, The Milo Foundation Sanctuary is located on two hundred and eighty-three acres in Mendocino County - offering lots of room for the animals to run and play. The Milo Sanctuary animals typically (but not exclusively) are harder to adopt animals and those needing more rural type homes, such as dogs with social or behavioural challenges, feral cats, horses and other farm animals. The Milo Point Richmond Adoption Center is where the majority of our new rescue intake takes place, typically friendly, adoptable cats and dogs, puppies and kittens rescued from shelters where they were facing euthanasia. The Sanctuary is where highly active or reactive dogs can go and have plenty of space, other canine companions (if they are dog friendly) and live in a stress free environment until such time as the right adoption match can be found.

The Milo Sanctuary is what enables Milo to be a No-Kill organization. Milo brings dogs back and forth from the Adoption Center (MPR) to the Sanctuary to give dogs a break from the stresses of the kennel environment and back to MPR later to try again at being adopted. Potential adopters also do come up to the Sanctuary to adopt, by appointment.
