My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tara is a pure-bred Blue Merle color smooth Collie. Mya is a pure-bred tri-color smooth Collie. Tara and Mya are litter-mate sisters and are 18 months old. They were purchased separately from a breeder when they were puppies, to become show collies. They are both show quality and were shown for a while. They are small collies, only 43 and 45 lbs.

Tara and Mya can be adopted together or separately. They have lived together off and on, and will be fine either way.

They have had all of their shots and are spayed. They are healthy young girls and their adoption fee will be $350 each.

Tara - is a very sweet and calm girl. She loves hugs and kisses and loves to lie on the sofa with her person and cuddle. She walks well on leash, gets along with other dogs very well, and is playful with them. She gets along with my very "dog savvy" cats now, but she was not sure about them at first and was overly interested in them. She does not bother my cats at all now, but I’m sure she would chase a cat if it ran, as many dogs would. I have seen no indication that she would hurt a cat. She has lost interest in the cats in my house now and can be trusted alone with them, but my cats have been very well socialized with many different dogs. I would only recommend Tara be placed with very dog savvy cats, if any.

Tara is good with children. I have evaluated her with children 3 and up. She is very food motivated though, and might take food from an unwilling child. I would recommend that she not be adopted by anyone with children under 8 years old.

Tara likes to take things like shoes, cardboard, etc, but she does not chew or destroy. She just likes to carry things around and play with them. She is curious and will take things out of my wastepaper basket, or any trash receptacle in the house if she has access. Again, she just likes to carry things around. She does jump up to see what is on the table sometimes, but has not taken anything. She has not done any counter surfing. It seems she just has not realized that there are things on the counter yet.

Tara was trained to show, so she was not trained to sit, lie down, etc. She is learning how to sit in her foster home. She is good with her bath and is accustomed to being groomed on a grooming table, blow dried, nails clipped, etc, so she is very good with all that. She will need to go to classes to learn obedience. She has very good recall.

I really love Tara. She has just a great personality, listens well, and is as sweet as can be. She is going to be someone's soul mate dog I think. Since she is only 18 months old, she will need lots of exercise, even though she is has such a calm personality.

Mya - is a little more shy than Tara is with people. She was actually mildly afraid of people, noises, etc., when she came into rescue. Mya had spent more time in a kennel situation rather than in a home. She is young, though, and is coming around very nicely. She has gotten over many of her fears already in just 3 weeks. Mya is extremely sweet, loving, and smart. Surprisingly she is trying to be the "top dog" around here with my dogs. She does get along with other dogs, but I feel she is the type that should be placed with a dog that is willing to let her be the boss, like her sister Tara does. Mya is definitely the higher ranking of the two sisters. Also, she would do well as an only dog, with other dogs friends to play with once in a while.

Mya should not go to a home with cats but is ok with older children. Mya, like Tara, likes to steal things like shoes, etc., but she has not destroyed anything except a few papers.

Mya is very mild mannered and calm for such a young dog, yet she loves to play with toys, other dogs, and people. She will even play with toys by herself, keeping herself occupied. She walks OK on a leash, but has not had any obedience training except for the show ring so she will need to go to classes. She has good recall, but because she is a bit shy, she tends to stay just out of reach if she is feeling insecure. We are working on that, and yesterday, when I pulled out her leash, she came right to me, letting me slip her walking collar over her head, because she knew it meant she was going for a walk, and she was excited. She has already learned that good things happen when she comes when she is called. She learns very quickly.

Mya has a cute, jovial personality. She likes to be wherever I am in the house and she is always in the same room as I am in. New 8.2.2010.

If you think you have the home that either of these two beautiful young collies would love to spend the rest of their lives in, please contact karen@calcollierescue.org
