My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

https://foha.org/pet/valentino2024/

ABOUT THIS ANIMAL:
Meet Valentino, a resilient and affectionate pup with a heart as big as his name suggests. After being rescued from a heartbreaking situation—tied to a tree for ten days with no food, water, or shelter—Valentino is learning what love and safety truly feel like. He’s a Diamond Dog, meaning he comes with extra behavioral support from FOHA to help him and his adopter thrive together.

Valentino is shy at first, especially around new people, but once he warms up, he’s affectionate, playful, and loyal. He’ll need a patient, experienced adopter willing to take things slowly, earning his trust over a few meet-and-greets. He looks to his person for confidence and blossoms when he feels safe.

HOW AM I WITH DOGS:
Dog-selective – I get along well with some dogs, particularly calm or submissive ones. I love to play rough and wrestle, but I don’t like being dominated or crowded. I’d likely do best being introduced to one dog at a time and would prefer to be the first dog in the home. A meet-and-greet is a must!

HOW AM I WITH CATS:
No cats, please! I’ve lived with cats before and it wasn’t a good fit.

HOW AM I WITH KIDS:
No kids – I’m too shy and unsure around fast movements and unfamiliar people, so a quiet, adults-only home is the best place for me to thrive.

I KNOW THE FOLLOWING COMMANDS:
I’m working on learning commands like “sit”, especially when treats are involved! I’ve made great progress in my foster home and respond well to positive reinforcement.

MY HOUSEBREAKING AND/OR CRATING:
I’ve done well with house manners in my foster home. With continued structure and encouragement, I’ll settle into a routine with ease.

THINGS I LIKE:

Playing fetch (watch out—I get excited and might bump into you!)

Tossing the ball around and being goofy in the yard

Earning treats for good behavior

Cuddles and affection from people I trust

One-on-one time with my favorite humans

Walks in quiet areas where I can explore at my own pace

THINGS I DISLIKE:

Fast introductions – I need time to feel safe and warm up to new people

Crowded or chaotic environments – a calm home is best for me

Other dominant dogs or being rushed in dog introductions

Cats – definitely not my thing

Walking past unfamiliar dogs – I may freeze or try to change direction if I feel overwhelmed
