Clovis’s story begins in heartbreak. Animal control officers were dispatched to a call about a “dead dog” on the train tracks. What they found instead was a miracle — a frail, emaciated dog, clinging to life, too weak to even stand. That dog was Clovis.
We don’t know much about Clovis’s past, but his broken body and cautious spirit tell a story of hardship and neglect. Despite it all, Clovis chose to survive. And now, with time, care, and compassion, he’s learning that life can be gentle.
Clovis is understandably wary of new people and unfamiliar situations. He’s people-selective and needs slow, respectful introductions. But once you earn his trust, you’ll find the most loyal, affectionate, and goofy friend you could ever ask for. Clovis doesn’t give his heart easily — but when he does, it’s yours completely.
He needs a quiet, stable home with no other animals, where he can decompress and continue healing at his own pace. A fenced-in yard is required so he can safely explore the outdoors without fear.
Clovis isn’t just looking for a home — he’s looking for a chance. A chance to feel safe. A chance to be loved. A chance to finally just be a dog.
Give Clovis that chance, and he’ll give you everything he has in return.

More about this shelter
At the Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark we are passionate about ensuring the protection and welfare of all animals in need. This is the legacy of our founder Robert Kleinstuber, who began the shelter in 1959 as a memorial to his beloved dog, Jeff.
Our mission is to protect and serve animals during their greatest time of need, assist our community pets and their people, and offer homeless pets a second chance at a first-rate life. By providing humane education along with free or low-cost resources, we hope to reduce the homeless pet population in our area.
We currently provide animal control impound services for 12 municipalities in Orange & Sullivan Counties and are proud to provide low-cost spay/neuter clinics, adoption and re-homing services, humane education, and community assistance to the tri-state area.
